~~New Year ~~ New Beginning ~~ New Start~~

Another Year for Thee
Another year is dawning!
Dear Master, let it be,
In working or in waiting,
Another year with Thee!
Another year of leaning
Upon Thy loving breast,
Of even deeper trusting,
Of quiet, happy rest.

Another year of mercies,
Of faithfulness and grace;
Another year of gladness,
In the shining of Thy face.
Another year of progress,
Another year of praise;
Another year of proving
Thy presence "all the days."
Another year of service,
Of witness to Thy love;
Another year of training
For holier work above.
Another year is dawning!
Dear Master, let it be,
On earth, or else in heaven,
Another year for Thee!

New Year's Day the first day of the year, is the oldest of all holidays. The celebrations are designed to get rid of the past and welcome the future.
Christians celebrated New Year's Day on March 25 until the Gregorian calendar (1582) moved it to January 1.
January is derived from Janus, the Roman god of gates and doors, and openings and beginnings. January was the 11th month in the ancient Roman calendar, but it came to be regarded as the first month in the 2nd century BC.
New Year was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year on what is now March 25, although they had no written calendar. The Babylonian new year celebration lasted for eleven days.
The Romans continued to observe the new year on March 25, but their calendar was tampered with by various emperors so that the calendar soon became out of synchronization with the sun.
In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the
new year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what was come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the new year. But in order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.
Although in the first centuries AD the Romans continued to celebrate the new year, the early Catholic Church condemned the festivities as paganism. But as Christianity became more widespread, the early church began
having its own religious observances concurrently with many of the pagan celebrations, and New Year's Day was no different.
January 1 has been celebrated as a holiday by Western nations for only about the past 400 years.
Traditions of the season :
Making of New Year's resolutions. This tradition also dates back to the early Babylonians. Popular modern resolutions maybe the promise to lose weight or quit smoking but the early Babylonian's most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment.
The Tournament of Roses Parade dates back to 1886. In that year, members of the Valley Hunt Club decorated their carriages with flowers. It celebrated the ripening of the orange crop in California. Although the Rose Bowl football game was first played as a part of the Tournament of Roses in1902, it was replaced by Roman chariot races the following year. In 1916, the football game returned as the sports centerpiece of the festival.
The tradition of using a baby to signify the new year was begun in Greece around 600 BC. They celebrated their god of wine, Dionysus, by parading a baby as the spirit of fertility. Early Egyptians also used a baby as a symbol of rebirth.
The early Christians denounced the practice as pagan, the popularity of the baby as a symbol of rebirth forced the Church to reevaluate its position. The Church finally allowed them to celebrate the new year with a baby, which was to symbolize the birth of the baby Jesus.
At the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve people will kiss or honk car horns.
A soul food of black-eyed peas and rice called "Hoppin' John" is eaten. It's a traditional New Year's Day dish in the South. Legend has it that it must be eaten before noon to guarantee good luck. In some families, a coin is buried in the rice and peas just before serving, ensuring a fortunate year for the discoverer.

When is the new Millennium?

Recipe for a Prosperous, Peaceful Year-Round Year !
Take twelve, fine, full-grown months,
see that these are thoroughly free from
all old memories of bitterness, rancor,
hate and jealousy; cleanse them
completely from every clinging spite:
pick off all specks of pettiness and
littleness; in short , see that these
months are freed from all the past;
have them as fresh and clean as when
they first came from the great
storehouse of Time.

Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one
equal parts. This batch will keep for just
one year. Do not attempt to make up the
whole batch at one time (so many persons
spoil the entire lot in this way), but
prepare one day at a time, as follows:
Into each day put twelve parts of faith,
eleven of patience, ten of courage, nine
of of work (some people omit this
ingredient and so spoil the flavor of
the rest), eight of hope, seven of
fidelity, six of liberality, five of
kindness, four of rest (leaving this
out is like leaving the oil out of the
salad, don't do it), three of prayer,
two of meditation, and one well selected
resolution. If you have no conscientious
scruples, put in about a teaspoonful of
good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of
folly, a sprinkling of play, and a
heaping cupful of good humor.

Pour into the whole love ad libitum and
mix with a vim. Cook thoroughly in a
fervent heat; garnish with a few smiles
and a sprig of joy; then serve with
quietness, unselfishness, and
cheerfulness, and a Happy New Year is certain.
