Chess

I've played chess for about 30 years. (I started very young.) I've played in tournaments on and off for the majority of that time. Currently, it's off--I haven't played a rated game for several years. But you can still occasionally find me at the Toms River Chess Club, where you can generally find good chess players and better people. On ChessWeb, anyone is welcome to come and play a move in an interactive game. (Look for "M-1"...that's me.)

The NJSCF is the New Jersey State Chess Federation, my local chess organization. At the national level, it is the USCF, whose website is well worth exploring. The titular world chess organization is FIDE, Fédération Internationale des Échecs, who in recent years have, with their honest, above board stewardship of the game, done for chess what the powers that be in pro boxing have done for that sport.

"The chess board is the world, the pieces are the phenomena of the universe, the rules of the game are what we call the laws of nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just, and patient. But also we know, to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."

--Thomas Henry Huxley
