He scored his first collegiate goal in a game against St. Cloud State on November 4, 1994. Casey scored the game winning goal against UMD during their WCHA playoff opener, and he also scored the game winner in a Final Five game against North Dakota. In June, following his freshman year, Casey was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks.
- 1995-1996 Sophmore Season
- During his sophmore year Casey played in a total of 39 games scoring 16 goals and 19 assists for a total of 35 points. In December of his sophmore season, Casey played on the U.S. Junior World Team representing the U.S. in the Junior World Hockey Championship which was held in Massachusettes. The U.S. team finished in 5th place. On January 5, 1996 Casey scored his first career hat trick in a game against Denver. Minnesota went on to win the game 7-3, and Casey was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. During January he scored goals in 4 consecutive games and had points in every game making his record for the month 7g-7a. However, the streak ran out in February and Casey was held without a point for the entire month. During the season Casey had 6 multiple-point games, had 8 power play goals(third highest on the team), and he also scored the last goal of the Gophers season in a loss to Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament. Casey was also a member of the 1995-96 WCHA All-Academic team.
- 1996-1997 Junior Season
- During his junior year Casey shared the role of team captain with Mike Crowley. During that time he played in all of the teams 42 games scoring 17 goals and 24 assists for a total of 41 points. Casey was also a finalist for the Humanitarian Award, and the winner of a team award--the Elwin "doc" Romnes leadership and sportsmanship award.
- 1997-1998 Senior Season
- For the second year in a row Casey was a team captain, this time sharing the duties with Ryan Kraft. Casey's senior year was a tough season for the Gophers. Casey himself had many obstacles in his path including a hip injury, a hand injury and even playing with the flu. Because this was Casey's final year with the Gophers he didn't seem to let anything stand in his way of playing, and was quoted as saying "I won't have another chance after this year, so I want to get out there and contribute." He played in 35 games scoring 10 goals and 30 assists. Casey's college career ended when the gophers lost to UMD 4-5(after leading 4-0) in the first round of the playoffs keeping the Gophers out of the final five. Casey was a finalist for the Humanitarian Award for the second year in a row, and he was also named to the 1997-98 WCHA all-academic team.

When Casey came to the University of Minnesota he had the option of playing both baseball and hockey. Lucky for all of us hockey fans, he picked the best of the two sports.
