Wicca or Witta as it was several thousands of years ago in Ireland, was a very simple, "homespun" or "peasant" religion, a faith of those who lived close to the earth and felt the gentle pulse of her ebb and flow. In general, most Wiccans of that time were solitary Witches, who chose to do their worship and spell work near or at the hearth. Others worked within their close-knit family groups. The items they chose to utilize in their magick were items that were readily available, many already in the home, the gathering of many complex tools or herbs to perform a particular spell was not done.
LUNAR MAGICK
Modern Wicca has since become more involved and complex, just as modern life itself is. Many Witches nowadays choose spells and rituals which are elaborate and quite complex; however, I prefer to use some of the more simple and basic spells and rituals, and find them to work just as successfully as the more involved spells.
Whether you choose to simplify your spells and rituals or to use a more elaborate approach is up to you, it is a matter of personal choice, and one way is certainly not more correct than the other.
I would suggest that you read several of the excellent books out there on oils, incense, herbs, gemstones, and spells and spellcrafting.(There are some wonderful books written on these subjects by Scott Cunningham, and I would definitely suggest that you read some of them -- I'll be adding a suggested reading list for the titles) There are hundreds, and possibly thousands of books on spells and spellcrafting.
There many that are quite good, but unfortunately, many are not. I certainly believe that reading books on spells and spellcrafting can do much to further your magickal knowledge and training. I dare to say with the use of some common sense, even bad advice is good, it gives you a place to start. I would offer, however, that once you feel that you have a solid foundation on the knowledge of spellcrafting and the use of herbs, stones, oils, etc. that you should begin to experiment and start coming up with your own personal spells and rituals.
I believe whole heartedly that the more you put into your spells, personally, the more you will get out of them, and the energy you use in coming up with your own spells will definitely help you in reaching your magickal goals.
There are many other things to consider before working your spell, such as days of the week, hours of the day, color correspondences, the moon phase, planetary and astrological influences.
For example, if the spell you are going to work is to draw something to you (such as good health), you would perform it during the waxing moon (the period of time when the moon's energy is building, between the new moon and full moon). If you desire to remove something (such as a bad habit or a health problem) you would perform it during the waning moon (the period of time between the full moon and the next new moon). There are also certain days of the week which are more appropriate for certain spells, for example, Friday (planetary ruler, Venus) is used for love magick, Saturday (Saturn) for banishing, etc... These things are important in determining when to work your magick, although in an emergency (such as healing a sick child, etc.) you can perform magick at any time, whether or not it is the correct day of the week, moon phase, etc.
There are four things, however, that are absolutely necessary and essential to working successful magick: a genuine need; a deep, emotional desire; the knowledge to work the spell; and the ability to visualize your magickal goal and result. When these four conditions are present, you have everything you need to successfully perform magick. If any of these are lacking, you probably won't be as successful in accomplishing your magickal goals.
To work any act of magick, it is nessicary to empower the objects that you will use in your spell or ritual. Your magickal tools should already be charged, but you will need to attune with and empower any herbs, stones, or other objects that you intend to use in your magick. This is done by holding the object in your power hand (the hand you write with) and feeling your energy and your need flow into the object.
Often times it is tempting to cut to the chase and begin working the actual spell without taking the time necessary to properly empower your magickal objects. This is a big mistake! It is this investment of your personal energy which makes the spell work...while it is true that magick takes place in the mind where your thoughts act upon the astral plane to form things which will manifest, most Witches use herbs, stones, etc. which are known to share an affinity for the desired goal. The magick is not in the objects themselves, they merely act as a catalyst which helps you focus, direct, and receive energy.
I mostly use a samll shop in WV to buy books, crystals and other things I use. I dearly love this shop and it makes my day better whenever I get to go back there. The lady who runs it always makes it worth the wait and she has an aura that says "Welcome" I am going to give her a plug here, because she deserves it.

The Moon is a symbol of Nature's cycle of birth, life, and rebirth. It represents the feminine principle, which is personified by the Triple Goddess (Maiden/Mother/Crone).
It is important to consider the appropriate lunar phases (Waxing, Waning, or Full Moon) when planning your magick. It is also extremely useful to align your spellwork to coincide with the appropriate astrological influences, to further aid your magickal goals. For example, spells and rituals involving the element of earth should be performed during a time when the Moon is positioned in one of the three astrological earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn, spells involving the element of fire during Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius, spells involving the element of air during Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius, and spells involving the element of Water during Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces.
Below are listed astrological signs and their correspondences to magickal applications:
PLANETARY CORRESPONDENCES
Another consideration of effective spell-crafting are the days of the week and their planetary correspondences. Each day of the week has an energy, or personality, which corresponds to a specific planet. If you learn the traits of the planet, you will then understand the energy pertaining to that particular day of the week.
The following chart will provide you with some basic information on days of the week and planetary correspondences:
THE ELEMENTS
The four basic elements: Earth, Air, Fire, & Water are considered in metaphysics as the four basic components that make up life itself. These elements all have different vibrations which, when properly aligned, can help to produce the desired results in your magick. The following chart will give you information relating to the four elements and their correspondences:
FRAGRANCE ASSOCIATIONS
It is important to carefully align your magickal acts. Once your magick is set in motion, it will achieve your magickal goal. This process has been called the domino effect, as each act represents one domino leading to your ultimate desire. As important as selecting the proper Day of the Week, Astrological Correspondence, etc. is the proper use of fragrance. Fragrance affects the central nervous system and the auric field. It can either raise or lower bodily vibrations, either elevating your mood or depressing it. Below is a list of commonly used fragrances and their planetary rulers:
COLOR CORRESPONDENCSE
Yet another "step" is to align is color. It has long been known that color radiations have a tremendous influence upon our health, thoughts, and actions. It is therefore important to use the appropriate color of gemstones, candles, etc. to further add power to your magick. The following chart will help you to find appropriate colors to use for each day of the week. Please note that my list may differ from others you have seen or read. Color use is basically an instinctual and personal choice, and you will find that the more you work magick, the more you will begin to rely on your own color choices for your workings. In the meantime, please feel free to use the following chart as a guide:
