Space... the final..wait a minute. This was the first Star Trek show that did not feature any talking as it opened. I guess on Deep Space Nine they weren't going where no one had gone before. In fact, the station was quite a busy place.
Deep Space Nine was the third television show based upon the original Star Trek. This show was a real departure for Star Trek. It was the first show not to feature the Enterprise. In fact, the first couple of years there was no Defiant either. Also, there was no captain. Commander Benjamin Sisko was assigned to command the station which had been built and occupied by the Cardassians.
As you can see, Deep Space Nine was vastly different from any other Star Trek show. It debuted in 1993 and was produced in syndication just as its predecessor was. This new show capitalized on the popularity of The Next Generation featuring Locutus of Borg on the first episode. We learn of Ben Sisko's involvement at the battle of Wolf 359 and the subsequent death of his wife. Ironically, it is Captain Jean-Luc Picard who gives Commander Sisko his briefing aboard DS9.
Although Deep Space Nine was much different from other shows, it did have something in common. It built its own fan base. Deep Space Nine never had the larger audience that The Next Generation enjoyed due to the fact that it was so different and had a darker feel to it. However, there are a good many shows that were written very well and as the show draws to a close this year, we can only hope the crew of Deep Space Nine lives long and prospers.
