On the 24th of November 1830 Bazel Pool appeared before Syman Potter Jr., deputy clerk of Trumbull County, Ohio, and gave his consent that his son, William Warren, might obtain a marriage license, the said William being under 21 years of age. In 1840 William appears to be living with his family in Brookfield Township, Trumbull County. At least the census listing agrees with the ages and sexes of the family members. In approximately 1848, the family moved across the state line into Hickory Twonship, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. The 1850 census for that place shows William in possession of $2400 worth of real estate. "The History of Mercer County, Pennsylvania, its past and present" indicates that William W. Pool was the postmaster of the Willow Brook Post Office, which was established 4 May 1855 and descontinued 9 December 1856. By the 1860 census the family had moved to a farm in Lake Township. Despite the fact that Lake Township is on the eastern side of Mercer County, it was settled at a later date than the townships along the Ohio border to the west. William had by 1860 accumulated real estate valued at $4250 and personal property amounting to $1081. By 1870 these amounts had grown to $8000 in real estate and $2000 in personal property, which would have made William a very prosperous farmer for those times. According to his obituary (Mercer Dispatch, July 11, 1879), William died on 26 June 1879, approximately ten days after being stricken with paralysis (no doubt what we would call a stroke) at his home in Sheakleyville. It is stated that "He was respected and beloved of all and leaves a sorrowing family, a wife and six children, to mourn his departure. His was a true and noble life." William had apparently been in good health up to that point because he died intestate (or without a will). In those days wills were oftentimes written only when the person in questions felt that their health was failing. The paralysis probably left William unable to make a will, which resulted in an unfortunate squabble over his estate among his surviving children. There are extensive probate records detailing all of the items which comprised William's estate. The listing and the value assigned to individual items is quite fascinating. Some examples are: a wagon ($35), a saddle (25 cents), parlor stove ($4), bedstead ($1), clock ($1), and hall carpet ($2). The record showed an appraised value of $11,730. The crux of the disagreement among the heirs was that the other children felt that Albert had received an unfair share of the estate because he was in posssession of the farm in Lake Township. It was two years before a document agreeing to a division of the estate was signed by the widow and children. In part it stated "Whereas there has been some difficulty between the parties above named in regard to the settlement and division of the estate of W.W. Poole and all the parties to this agreement wish to make a pleasant and amicable settlement of all matters between them in regard to said estate." The widow, Nancy, agreed to the division of the estate, including her share, in return for annual support to be provided equally by her children. Albert received the 100 acre plus farm in Lake Twonship, which he had been working for a number of years, for the sum of $2000, and the other children signed quit claim deeds. The real estate in Sheakleyville, which was occupied by William and Nancy at the time of William's death, and the lots in the Borough of Sharon were to be sold as soon as was convenient. The proceeds were to be divided with one half being split between the two surviving sons, Albert and Dillon, and the other half to be shared equally among the daughters, Sarah, Florence, Martha, and Nancy. However, there was apparently still some lingering animosity towards Albert because when Nancy died, the other children petitioned the court to appoint someone else besides Albert as administrator, eventhough Nancy left an estate worth less than $500. William and Nancy lost three of their ten children to illness, as was so common in those times. Joseph (age 22), Olive (age 11), and Newton (age 8) all died within a month of each other in January and February 1854. In all likelihood, the culprit was scarlet fever or diptheria. In addition, their son George fell victim to the ravages of the Civil War at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Albert lived on the farm that he inherited from his father and raised a large family. Sarah married a prosperous farmer and also lived out her life in Mercer County. Dillon (or D.P.) lived for many years in Mercer County and is probably buried there as well. Florence and Martha Jane appear to have moved away after the deaths of their parents. The fate of Nancy, the youngest child, is not known, but she was still unmarried at the time of her parents' deaths. 1. William Warren Pool (1811-1879) + Nancy Hobbs Mariner (1812-1883) 2.
