About 1851 the family moved to Indiana, settling first in Elkhart according to the obit of Molly (Mary Jane Hershberger), Matthias' only daughter. They were in this county at least a couple of years indicated by the fact that Matthias was recorded in October 1853 as a witness in a Baugo township Justice Docket. Soon after they moved to the Fountain county area where John B Poole was married in December of 1853. In 1858 Malachi was married in Rockville of Parke county and on September 13,1859 Matthias' wife Ruth, nee Keesecker, died and was buried in the Zackmire cemetery, which is just north of the Parke county line in Fountain county.
Shortly afterwards Matthias moved again as we find that he was enumerated during the 1860 census in Shelby county Illinois in or near the town of Moweaqua. In the same household were Malachi, his wife Lydia, daughter Mary (Jennie) and Robert N with his wife and children. It is not known how long Matthias was in this area though we know some of his family were in the Chicago area late in 1860 and then in St. Joseph county, Indiana by 1862. Matthias died at the age of 75, June 30, 1877 in Walkerton Indiana.
