The Abraham Lincoln Connection

Lincoln's Maternal Ancestry Came From The Shipley's of Maryland

Before continuing with the genealogy of Basill Poole I's decendants, we should examine an interesting facet of our heritage from his wife Lowis. Lowis Shipley came from one of Howard County's most prominent families. She was the daughter of Richard and Susannah (Stevens) Shipley and
granddaughter of Adam Shipley, known as "Adam the First," who came from England in 1668. Adam Shipley settled first in Anne Arundel County near Annapolis and later moved west to what is now Howard County. Adam's wife, also Lois, is thought to have been the daughter of Cornelius Howard, who sold a tract known as Howard and Porters Range to Adam Shipley. It is believed that the maternal ancestry of Abraham Lincoln can be traced to Adam Shipley, the Emigrant.

The parentage of Lincoln's mother Nancy Hanks had long been a subject of debate due to some misleading statements by early authors. The main problem stemmed from the fact that there were two Nancy Hanks, one of whom was the aunt of the Nancy Hanks who was Lincoln's mother.

The most widely accepted premise now is that Joseph Hanks, who had a daughter Nancy, also had a son James who married Lucy Shipley and they had a daughter named Nancy. Lucy was widowed at an early age and later married Henry Sparrow. Lucy, grandmother to Abraham Lincoln, was the great grandaughter of Adam Shipley so that she was a second cousin to the children of Basill and Lowis Shipley Poole. Nancy, Lincoln's mother was a third cousin to Basil III and the Great Emancipator is a fourth cousin to the descendants of Basil III.
