Umberto Vezza

1912-1998

The branch of my father Umberto, or Al, as he is commonly referred to, begins on May 25, 1912 at 166 Mulberry Street.  Most of his memories are also from the time spent in Union City, NJ.   Like his brothers Vincent & Domenico, he will learn from his older brother Gennaro the ways of auto mechanics, carpentry, plumbing and above all, family values.

On July 26, 1936 Umberto's branch united with the branch of Josephine Baron.   Their early years are spent in Newark, NJ.   Finally in 1953 they move to Livingston and in 1970 they purchase a summer home in the shore community of Wildwood Crest, NJ, and in 1982 they make Lakewood, NJ their final stop. They have two sons, Robert in 1937 and me, Raymond in 1942.  Our parents marriage lasted just 1 month shy of 50 years when my mother's branch ceased existance on June 1, 1986. Our father remarried to Lucretia (Della Monica, Marino) in January of 1989. On Wednesday morning November 18, 1998, with family by his side, our father left us after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Marrying in May of 1962 and starting his family in September of 1963, Bob & Genevieve would eventually have 3 children, Linda in 1963, Bob, Jr. in 1965, and  Debra in 1971.  In 1985 Bob remarried and he and Dianne now reside in Illinois.

Linda married Frank Henshaw in 1985 and they have added to the family tree the branches of Katie and Kim.  In August of 1992 Bob, Jr. and Sherri Somers married and settled down in their home overlooking the countryside of northern New Jersey.  Bob's youngest daughter, Debbie, was married in June 1998.

In 1981 I married Cece Shetline and we have added to the tree the branches of Jessica and Michael.  Jessica is currently a senior in high school, active with the local 4-H chapter and a serious equestrian.  Michael is completing his sophmore year and is very involved with the local and school theaters.  He is also pursuing dance and voice lessons and his dream is to someday "make it big".
