Scotland United Church was founded as a Congregational Church in 1835 by the Rev. James Hall. The village was then known as
Malcolm's Mills and the Congregation met in the school house. In 1848 William Hay was called as Pastor, ordained there, and
the present church building was completed, using largely volunteer labor. The gothic windows were beyond local craftsman and were specially ordered. The distinctive spire was added in 1859 and contains a bell, still in use, which for many years was each day rung morning, noon and night. Rev. Hay served as pastor for 47 years, residing in the village until his death.
The first organ (second hand) was installed in the gallery in 1863. In 1871 the church was reseated and renovated, with the present choir chancel being added. In 1967 the present Neutel organ replaced the reed organ in use since 1916.
Over the years a number of memorial gifts have been made including the pews, the cross used at the front of the church, the choir folders and the communion table.
In 1954 a Church Hall with stage and kitchen facilities was added, again with the help of much volunteer labor. It has been and continues to be well used for community actibites including Cubs, Scouts, Guides, the Community Vacation Bible School as well as church events.
For a 150 Anniversary project an attractive side-entrance lobby area, new washrooms, 3 new classrooms and office space were added and both church and Hall made wheel chair accessible. Recent improvements include a new sound system, recarpeting of the church proper and a lighted sign. Plans for the future include the redecorating of the hall.
We have an active and growing Sunday School with dedicated teachers, and a Youth Group. A large Junior Chior which practices weekly and sings during the service regularly, and a Senior Choir that is a part of the service every Sunday.
