The Church had its beginning on December 28, 1865, when the Rev. Peter German presided for a meeting that would eventually establish a Wesleyan Methodist Church in the village of Harley, then called Derby. Mr. Josiah Bennett was authorized to construct the building for the sum of $800.00. Work continued for over a year and the first worship service was held in February of 1867.
In 1925 the church became part of the United Church of Canada.
Perhaps the most significant change over the years was the addition of the hall completed in 1987.
Sunday School has been held at Harley for over one hundred years and a women's group continues to contribute the social and spiritual life of the church having begun as the "Ladies Aid" in 1906 and now called the U.C.W. (United Church Women).
