The smartest raccoon on the block tries to make her summer a little more exciting. It's almost the end of July. That means only one more month of summer, and then school starts again. I don't really mind going to school, and summer is starting to get boring anyway. When it's not raining, it's too hot to even go outside! I have been spending a lot of time just finding things to do by myself while I'm inside. Molly (that's my older sister) is not around that much. She has a job at the mall and goes to her friend's houses all the time. That's what you do when you're a teenager who can drive, I guess. My mom is away for the summer on a research assignment, but she's coming home in seven weeks. I e-mail her every day. I've been telling her all about this e-zine me and Yowzer are working on. She thinks it's the greatest idea! My dad usually shuts himself up in his air conditioned study during the day. He doesn't teach at the college during the summer, so he decided to write a book. I started writing a book too. It's hard work but my dad says it's great so far and will probably get published before his does! All Yowzer wants to do when it's this hot is go swimming in my pool. Swimming is really fun in the beginning of the summer, but after you get really bad sunburn a few times and your eyes always sting from the chlorine, you get tired of doing it every day.
Last week when I was bored, my dad showed me how to build the best fort ever in my room with blankets and sheets. For some reason, everything is more exciting when you're hiding under blankets with only a flashlight for light. When it was time to take the fort down, I let Joey take care of that. He made a mess of my room, but it was fun to watch him attack the fort. My dad also showed me how to make the best fruit drink ever. You take three cups of chopped fruit (like strawberries, peaches, cantaloupe, or bananas; you can use more than one kind) and put it in the freezer overnight. The next day you put the fruit in a blender or food processor (get your mom or dad to help with this part) with one cup of apple or orange juice and blend it until it is smooth. You can also make it with milk instead. Just add one cup of milk and two tablespoons of sugar instead of the juice. It's my favorite thing to drink on a hot summer day... and this sure is a hot summer day... I think I'm going to give Yowzer a break and let him come swimming. Then maybe he'll stop whining about it! Don't forget you can e-mail me at yowzer@geocities.com. I hope to hear from you soon! -Clarice.
