GENRE GATEWAY:

Why the changes?:

Quite simply, the genre page got to be about 50K, with some sections having over 30 links. Actually, I'd been thinking about splitting the page up and a mad session of adding links on Friday the 13th (10/13/2000) kinda solidified the decision. Now, sit back and here comes the long-winded explanation about why you shouldn't let the divisions stop you from looking through all the links, at least in some cases. If you're looking for story resources in 'Childrens' and 'Erotica'...uh...get off my page.

It's important to note that 'genre' is a slippery term. According to the 7th edition of The Handbook to Literature genre is "used to designate the types or categories into which literary works are grouped according to form, technique, or, sometimes, subject matter" It also lists the traditional genres as including "tragedy, comedy, epic, lyric and pastoral" and says a modern division would include "novel, short story, essay, television play, and motion picture scenario." It says a genre classification implies "that there are groups of formal or technical characteristics among works of the same generic kind regardless of time or place of composition, author or subject matter; and that these characteristics when they define a particular group of works, are of basic significance in talking about literary art" and goes on to talk about how many critics today see genre as useful descriptive devices but also as arbitrary ones because of the way genre boundaries shift (for example, Glen Cook's 'Garret' series is a mix of fantasy and the hard-boiled detective genre).

"If you write X, you might want to also take a look at Y" My own handy-dandy chart to help you figure out where else you might want to look for writing information, at least within The What Manifesto. *G*
