The Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter Inc.

Shelter building The Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter of Sprakers, NY was informally organized in 1972 by a small group of local animal lovers. They formed the Dog Protective Association and housed stray animals in a member's farm. From these humble beginnings grew the Animal Shelter Association who built the shelter in 1975, that had a 30 dog/30 cat facility. We are very happy to announce our new shelter, built in the early part of 1998, with better and larger facilities. Please take a tour of the Shelter.

STAFF

The staff includes 3 full-time and 6 part-time employees, and a Veterinary Technician. Two local vets are consulted for emergency cases and an out of town vet donates his services for costly procedures. We have a spay/neuter program set up with one of the vet hospitals whereby shelter animals are charged very low fees. Programs like this also assist individuals with low incomes and/or several dependents. Spaying and neutering is VERY Important to us.

FUNDING

Shelter funding comes from donations, fund raising and from contracts with 9 municipalities for dogs and one for cats.

POLICY

All of our animals are given a rabies vaccine upon entering the shelter. The animals then are wormed, treated for parasites, and receive vaccines and treatment as necessary. If an animal exhibits anti-social behavior from a past abuse, it is worked with by staff and volunteers until it becomes adoptable.
Volunteers are very important and help not only at the shelter, but with our many fund raising activities, our newsletter, memberships, etc.
We must keep cages open for our contract holders, but when space is available, we take in unwanted pets from private individuals. If we are full, we will help individuals find other sources or put them on a waiting list. This is now our policy rather than euthanizing because of overpopulation. No animals are euthanized unless they have advanced incurable diseases or if they are too vicious to be handled.
