Worldwide Migration

The Spong family has emigrated from England mostly to the English speaking world in Oceania and North America. The Spong family in Sweden seems to have a different history, and may or may not be connected to the Spong's of English origin.  It seems the Swedes had too many people with the same last name, and so some were given the name Spong among others to create a greater diversity of names.  Hence they may not be connected with the English Spongs at all.

Hopefully this page will encourage others to contribute to a fuller understanding of Spong history.

Australia

It is possible that the first Spong in Australia was a builder of opera houses, who first landed in Perth, Western Australia.

He must have moved to the east coast eventually, as most Spongs seem to reside in the states of Victoria and New South Wales. Several other Spong families also eventually migrated from Britain to Australia.

It seems that a father and daughter were once artists who have paintings exhibited in the Bondi art gallery. Australians refer to what Americans call flip-flops as thongs. These beach shoes are made in Victoria by Doug Spong, with the label "Spongs."

Britain

Spongs in Britain were reputed to have been shipwrights who built the famous Golden Hind. Later, they manufactured kitchen ware. It appears the factory is no longer in production.

USA

The Spong family in the United States seems to have migrated from England via the Netherlands to escape religious persecution. They eventually settled in the United States. Virginia was home to Senator Spong.
