There were two new additions to our child care this fall: Ginger & Frisky, our two gerbils. Here is the cage all prepared for their homecoming. Tig-Tig is trying to figure out if there is a way to drill through the bottom to get to the critters for a "late night snack!" For a more close up picture of Tig-Tig, check out my Family Room.

Do you know whether this is an Asian elephant or an African elephant? The daycare children were all able to correctly identify which type this one was when we visited the Henry Vilas Zoo this summer. (For the answer -- and some more great pictures -- please visit my Field Trips page.)
A Sweet Moment

One of the advantages of family child care is that children spend their time in a mixed age group. Younger children learn from the older ones, and the older children can nurture the younger ones. Here Alex, the "baby" of our daycare for a year and a half, delights in Jessica, a new arrival. He was amazingly gentle with her!

Kids Say the Darndest Things!

Today I heard some loud, unhappy noises coming from the playroom, so I went to investigate. It was obvious Nathan and Alex were fighting over the same toy (Nathan is 3 1/2, Alex is 18 mo). I asked the standard question of all the children, "Who had it first?" Nathan piped up, "I did!" I asked him, "Where did you get it from?" and he replied, "From Alex!" Out of the mouths of babes...

The other day, when one of my moms came to pick up her son, she was sitting on the couch and we were talking. Her son was sitting on her lap, and one of the other day care children decided to try to talk to this mother (who happens to be her aunt). The mom was doing a pretty good job talking both to me and to the little girl, but her son obviously felt a bit left out. All of a sudden he wrapped his arms around his mother's neck and loudly stated to the rest of us, "This is my Mommy! Get your own!!!"

In January, our theme was "Definitely Dinosaurs!" At the end of one day, two of the children were pretending to be their favorite dinosaurs. Sarah was a triceratops, and Nik was a tyrannosaurus rex. After awhile of playing, they began arguing. Soon they came out to the living room to seek the advice of my teenage son. "What do I eat?" asked Sarah (triceratops). My son answered that she ate plants, like leaves and grass. Sarah walked back into the den muttering, "Grass?! YUCK!" Nik lagged behind and asked, "I eat meat, don't I?" When my son answered in the affirmative, Nik charged into the den shouting (much to Sarah's dismay), "Oh, goody! I getta eat YOU!!"
