Later, his widow had a disagreement with the SINCLAIR family and moved Louis' body to a plot across the road where she and Louis are buried with another marker. The genealogist/researcher for my SINCLAIR line was Sinclair OSWALD who died suddenly and unexpectedly in the fall of 2003. For several decades, he passionately researched into the John William SINCLAIR-Mary GRAHAM descendants and created an extensive, thorough genealogy which he hoped to publish. It never was published because Oswald was always finding yet another piece of fascinating SINCLAIR history. Letters from Oswald to my mother and me are available on this website.
John William SINCLAIR, of Caithness, Scotland, came to America in 1821.
This link shows all children of John William SINCLAIR and Mary GRAHAM.
The following is from a newspaper, most likely "The Houston Post" or "The Houston Chronicle" (Texas, USA).
The Name GameSinclairs Became Big Landowners
The first appearance of the Sinclair name in recorded history was written as "Sancto Claro." This was in the year 1086. The owner of the name lived in Somerset, England. From that time the name has undergone many development changes in spelling, some of these are "deSencler," "deSeincler," "deSeintcler," and "deSancler."
It was in Scotland that the Sinclair name reached its highest pinnacle with regard to nobility and the recipients of coats of arms. In fact, up to the year 1873 Sir John Sinclair owned 78,053 acres of land in Tollemache and Mrs. Thomas Sinclair 57,757 acres in Fenswick.
The Sinclairs were not always great landowners. When they first appeared in Scotland in the early 12th century, they were vassals of the great territorial magnates deMorville, but by the year 1124 the Sinclairs possessed the barony of Roslin, near Edinburgh, Scotland.
They are not a Scottish clan in the true sense of the term. Rather they were a territorial family whose dependents were related to them on a feudal basis. They were not the most peaceful group of people, an ancient poem refers to them:
"Sinclair, Sutherland, Keith, and Clan Gunn,
"There never was peace when these four were in."One of the early arrivals to America was a Robert Sinclair, who came from Caithness, Scotland, in the year 1677, and landed in New York.
About 100 years before this time, George Sinclair, fourth Earl of Caithness, imprisoned his eldest son in a dungeon in Girnigoe Castle because he concluded a "peace" treaty with the Murrays. The record reads: "He wes keiped in miserable captivitie for the space of seaven yeirs, and died at last in prissone by famine and vermine." The records also tell us that his brother William, while taunting the victim, was attacked and died two weeks later.
Grants of arms have been made to the Sinclair name in Hermonstone, East Lothian, Mey, Oldbarr, Longformacus, County Berwick, Dumbeath, and Caithness. There are more than 20 coats of arms recorded for the name, most of them in Scotland.
Today is Tuesday, May 21; the 142nd: day of 1968
