    OIL FILTER PLUGGING:CAUSES AND EFFECTS.

    If an oil filters plugs,its only doing itds job.So-called "premature"plugging is a symptom of trouble somewhere in the engine. In this cases,the filter itselfis a valuable diagnostic tool.Examining the element provides information leading to the basic problem and its correction.

    OIL AND ADDITIVES
    The natural and inevitable result of engine operation is oil contamination from combustion by products.So refiners use additive "packages"-as much as 40% by volume-to help oil lubricate better and last longer.Todays additive packages can suspend and disperse serveral pounds of contaminants in the lubricating oil.These ultra-fine particles simply pass through the oil filters during normal operation.They remain harmlessly in suspension until drained from the engine during periodic oil changes.

    EXCESSIVE CONTAMINATION.
    When the additive package reaches its limit,however,the ultra fine particles cling together and drop out of suspension.The result is rapid filter plugging.The plugged filters shows a heavy buildup of loose sludge.The causes include high blow-by and overextended drain intervais.

    IMPAIRED DISPERSANCY.
    Water condensasation or coolant leakage into the crankcase causes impaired dispersancy.Soot drops out and plugs the filter as shiny tightly held sludge.The moisture also makes "waves" in pleated paper filter elements.


    ADDITIVE PRECIPITATION
    Another symptom of a coolant-leakage problem is additive precipitation.The plugged filters has a distinctive gray color and wavy pleats

    GEL FORMATION
    Water-contarninated oil,often from a bulk storage tank,causes gel formation.Additive packages cant handle more than one-half of one percent water without dropout.The plugged filter often appears clean,because the water evaporates quickly when exposed to the air,but it leaves behind telltale wavy pleats.

    OXIDATION
    .When oxidation products accumulate beyond the oils capacity to dissolve them,oxidation plugging occurs.Common causes are high engine operating temperatures and/or using the wrong oil formulation.The plugged filters is a reddish color.High Temperature oxidation also gives the filter an unpleasantty pungent odor.

    ABRASIVES AND WEAR METALS.
    Its an uncommon cause for filter plugging,but oversized abrasive particles and/or visible wear metals in the filter indicate severe engine wear or major component failure.

    BEWARE "SIMPLE" SOLUTION
    Watch out when filter plugging appears easily solved by changing filter brands.If low strength media in a low-end filters falls,you've traded one problem (filter plugging) for another (increased engine wear) Even worse, you won't know it until considerable damage is already done.
