Writing:
La Tomatina
Painting the town red
(TNT Magazine, United Kingdom, July 29, 2002, Issue 987) |
 |
It's a simple principal, you've
known it since toddler-hood: there's something rewarding about flinging food hard and fast
at a deserving foe. Your mother and grade school teachers didn't appreciate the glory of
the game, but somewhere in southern Spain they understand. Over the course of the
past 58 years, the food fight has been taken to a new level -- La Tomatina, a festival in
the small town of Buņol, now gathers roughly 20,000 people from all over the world to
bash their fellow man (and woman) with 150,000kg of that delectable, red fruit, the
tomato. full article |
Enchanted
Rock
(March, 2000 The Edge of Austin)
Out in the middle of nowhere, Texas, a few miles north of
Fredericksburg, stands a gigantic batholith that reaches 325 feet above Shady Creek, which
flows around its base. Until it was discovered that the creaking noises from the rock were
merely the sounds of the rock contracting as it cools, the geological phenomenon was
thought to be enchanted by spirits. full article

Asthmatics Outdoors
(May, 2000 The Edge of Austin)
Breathing in that fresh, pollen-filled, country air
. . . and continuing up the hillside
Looking up the Central Texas hillside just a moment ago,
it didn't look so steep. The beautiful spring afternoon seemed perfect for a day of
adventure in the Great Outdoors. Mother Nature seemed to be smiling through crystal blue
skies and the brightly colored faces of wildflowers.
Now the flowers mock every struggled step and the
whistling wind isn't the sound of a gentle breeze rustling through the trees, but the
sound of tortured lungs trying to expel air through the swollen airways of an asthma
attack. full article
