Iribar Restaurant - Getaria
in the Basque Country

Iribar is both a restaurant and a hostal in the Basque coastal town of Getaria.

You will find there fine traditional Basque cuisine and a warm atmosphere. The chef is Pili Manterola, a young cook trained with the best Basque restaurateurs, and also a grand-daughter of the founder of the restaurant.

Besides the Restaurant, Iribar offers 4 rooms (renewed in 1998; bathroom in all) for guests. Reservation is needed for most part of the year, as Getaria is a much requested destination in the Basque coast.

Iribar is located in the centre of Getaria, just in front of the San Salbador church, a jewel in Gothic art, built in the 14th century.

Getaria is a small fishermen's town in the spanish side of the Basque Coast, in the province of Gipuzkoa, 20 min. from San Sebastian and just 1 hour from Bilbao and its Guggenheim Museum, or the famous resort of Biarritz, in the french side of the Basque Coast.

It is located on the spot of a natural cape, the San Anton mountain, also known as the Mouse of Getaria, because of its obvious shape. The fishermen's port and the traditional steppy medieval streets combine with the two beaches (one is a surfing spot) and a leisure port.

Known since the 13th century, Getaria has a magnificient Gothic church, located just in from of Restaurant Iribar. Visiting Getaria you feel history alive around you. This is the place where Juan Sebastian Elcano, the first man to sail around the Globe (after Magellan died in the journey), was born.

Another illustrous son of the town is Cristobal Balenciaga, the dress designer, one of creators of Parisian haut-couture style in 20th century... A museum dedicated to Balenciaga will open in Getaria soon.

Getaria is just one single worthy place to visit in the Basque coast. Fortunately, the Basque Country is full of such pleasant locations.
