Azad Reading Room Bharat Samajh: India
Report |
||||||||||||
NEW UPDATED: SEPTEMBER 12, 2008 Azad Reading Room (ARR) is a resource centre for grass roots activists and researchers in voluntary action. It combines a resource center, a documentation collective and a small publishing initiative. Azad Reading Room locates itself as a resource that provides space and information at the present juncture of global turbulence. We perceive this in the form of debate within Marxism as well as within broader trends of socialism including social anarchism. One side of the debate focuses on contemporary corporate capitalism, imperialism, World Bank, IMF, WTO with a particular concern regarding the connections between militarization, the waging of war (as in Iraq & Afghanistan) and the viability of capitalism. ARR encourages the study of the critiques of classic socialism (1917-1967) from the perspective of contemporary social movements (ecological, feminist, indigenous people, gay & lesbian, dalits among others). A transparent & accountable debate can help in the emergence of an appropriate theory and practice And for the debate to be effective it has to reach all parts of the globe and all sections of people. The resource centre is a small local action in global thinking. The resource centre has diverse users. Its English books have been used by individuals and groups in Hyderabad, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. They include environmentalists, left wing and labour groups, feminists, gays, and voluntary organizations. Azad Reading Room was started with a donation of books from Prof. S.A. Shah. Since then we are receiving books from many personal collections in Hyderabad, for instance, Prof. Shantha Sinha, Saral Sarkar, Dr. Venkat, Uzramma and Lata. We also received books from Dr. Claude Alvares’ library and Other India Bookstore in Goa. In the last several years Prof. Shah, with the help of his friends in the USA, has sent multiple shipments of books and magazines. Most of the books pertain to the focus areas of the resource centre and have been received very well. Many books were specifically requested and thus were received with joy and excitement. For example, Agroecology, Against the Grain, Beyond Growth, The Long Twentieth Century, Beyond Capital, Time Labour and Social Domination, Addicted to War, Ethics, Diaries of Anais Nin, Crime fiction of Sara Paretsky, and Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowar. In 2005, ARR separated from its association with MV Foundation and forged an alliance with Aman Vedika (Peace Forum/Education). ARR is now located in Secunderabd, A.P. The present holdings of ARR include over 2500 books plus a variety of journals, magazines, newspapers and documents. Some of the journals & magazines come to ARR as regular subscriptions (see list at the end of this segment). The Telugu materials at ARR are slowly expanding. There are a small number of Hindi and Urdu publications. ARR has a collection of over 300 video programmes (documentaries & feature films). Every year new DVD’s are added to the collection. A project to screen the video’s on a regular basis is being explored. Prof.Shah screens some of the new videos in several cities of India including film festivals in Bangalore and Kolkata. New screening contacts have been established in New Delhi, Mysore, Mumbai and Chennai. The Reading Room has published 17 books/booklets in English and Telugu. In 2008 a new booklet on ECOLOGY---- was published. A translation of selected English booklets into Telugu is being explored. From selected Telugu booklets a reading project for children has been initiated. A wall newsletter for/by children has been started as of the summer of 2008. A proposal is being discussed to record (on tape) selected presentations by speakers with the objective of publishing a transcribed/edited version of the speeches.
