HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK

After a good night's rest at a motel in Ticaboo, Utah we head down and into the Bullfrog Marina. At 11:00 a.m. we load our truck and trailer onto the large ferry from Bullfrog Marina across an arm of Lake Powell to Hall's Crossing.

After unloading from the ferry we drive by truck another 5 miles and arive at the Hall's Crossing Air Strip. Here we unload our ATVs and tried to get into our winter/wet gear as it is raining quite hard.

At last on our way, we travel parallel the Hall's Crossing Air Strip runway for a little while, then head down into the Lake Canyon area and on out onto the Hole-in-the-Rock trail and Grey Mesa. The terrain we have to navigate and maneuver in is awesome steep drops and large climbs are the order of the day.

Most all gulleys and washes are in various stages of flooding. It rains, pours, and drizzles on our weary heads all day. Near dark we arrive at a suitable camp area. The storm has momentarily let up long enough for us to dig out a flat area to set up our tent. We no sooner set our three-man tent up than all three Kantor Klan have to dive into it with their sleeping bags. It starts to pour again and never lets up all night. It is pouring down and flooding all around us all night long. The slick rock absorbs no moisture, so it all runs off. We are very glad our tent is on high ground.

Morning finds a complete break in the storm;blue sky and sun greet us. We climb back on our Foremans and head out towards Grey Mesa. After negotiating much treacherous slick rock terrain we break with the morning sun on top of Grey Mesa, overlooking the Chute and Hole-in-the-Rock on the southwest and the big bend of the San Juan River on the northeast.

After a few Kodak moments we are back on our ATVs for a hotfoot race out to Hall's Crossing Air Strip and load ATVs in time to make the ferry crossing (It has very limited runs in the off season).

At 4:00 pm we arive at Bullfrog Marina, end our eventful ride, and start our journey back home.
