The rhetoric of the bulletin board system was one of freedom of information and control of content. Rather than expand on that I have set up some links to groups that epitomize spirit of the BBS scene.The TRIAD site is of particular interest. Check out what they supposedly did to the CIA's homepage. The Exodus and Ikari links take you to a site that very much carries on the tradition of Commodore BBSs. The rhetoric of information freedom and effective communication through specialized groups is carried on in this site proven that the dominant rhetoric of the web is not necessarily the only rhetoric possible.
