Midi Files A word about MIDI files. Please understand that MIDI files have no musical value in themselves. The best comparison I can think of is that of a piano roll that was used in the old player pianos. The MIDI file simply tells the MIDI player what notes to play, what instrument (voice) to use and all of the timing, etc. It has no musical value by itself. It must have a player such as those made by Roland and many other keyboard manufacturers. Software such as Crescendo and the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas in combination with a sound card with MIDI voices built in are needed in order to play MIDI files on your computer. MIDI players range all the way from free Shareware to thousands of dollars for rack mounted modules and keyboards. In many ways you get what you pay for; however, you can get some pretty good stuff for not a whole lot. I use the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas VSC-3 software that came with Power Tracks Pro 8.0 and the entire package was around $30. I think it sounds pretty good. All of the MIDI backup in my Real Audio files was recorded using the VSC-3 to play the Midi file. Listen to and download the files below as you wish. But remember, the sound will only be as good as your equipment can produce. The latest version of BIAB-2004 now offers the VSC-3 DXi Synth. Which has even better instrument sounds. BIAB-2004 also now has the capability to incorporate audio recording so that you can sing a melody line into your file and even more, you can put up to four part harmony of you own voice into the same song. It is fantastic. To my knowledge there is nothing like it out there. My goal is to use it to put backup singer parts into my sequences using my voice or someone better than me. I don't sing well, but this program will actually pitch correct for you. You have to really try to sound bad. Also, you need to understand that most of these MIDI files were designed or altered to allow them to serve as backup for my Steel Guitar. They could also be used as backup for a singer. There is in most cases three verses, with the second verse having a melody line. If you have a software sequencer on your computer, feel free to rearrange any that you download to suit your needs. I do not put sequences on this site for download that are copywritted. These are either my own work or the work of friends that also have them avaialble for download.
