Flood News (Taken from a varity of news reports)

- A state of emergency remains in effect for Peterborough, Ont. after heavy rain overnight caused massive flooding in the area.
Peterborough Mayor Sylvia Sutherland Police Chief Terrence McLaren declared the emergency crisis at 7am.
In the mid-morning, there were fears of a dam in the area breaking. The downpour caused storm sewers to back up in the central Ontario city of Peterborough,
leaving much of its downtown core and west end under water. Rivers and streams flowed rapidly and up to five more centimeters of rain were expected to fall on the community through the day on Thursday.

People were being advised not to drink the water after the city's Jackson Creek overflowed. Police said most streets were impassable, with the water almost one-meter deep and lapping at car windows.
The heavy rains left streets flooded in nearly a meter of water and closed stores, after the roof of a shopping mall to collapse.

"It's insane. We had an officer come in from a place east of here in Havelock,
which is about a 20-minute drive from here, and it was bone dry until he reached the outskirts of the city," said Sgt. John Lyons of the Peterborough Lakefield Police Services.
"He said it hit him just like a tidal wave."
"It's a localized cell of rain that is just parked over Peterborough. It's just bizarre." "It's very wet here in Peterborough," said Mayor Sylvia Sutherland.
"Don't flush your toilets and don't go down to the basement," she advised people in the city. A group of senior citizens had to leave their home after their building flooded and the roof caved in.
There have been no injuries reported. The manager of the local newspaper, Ed Arnold, said he tried to leave his home around 6am, but the downpour was so intense, he decided to turn back and head for home.
"It's wild here. I've never seen anything like it and I've lived here most of my life," he said. And it looked as though the paper wouldn't hit the stands on Friday as the newsroom is under water.
The public transit system was also shut down. One of the biggest challenges rescue teams faced was saving 200 people from a senior's residence where the roof had caved in.
The storm came at the height of tourist season and many fear the businesses in the heart of the community may lose millions.
Further heavy rains were expected across much of Ontario, with specific warnings for Belleville, Halliburton, Algonquin Pembroke, Smiths Falls and Lanark.

My account of the flood, and other reports…..

Thu, 15 Jul 2004 05:34:29 -25 -50 Ml. of rain is still expected for today! The downtown area is covered; phone lines are down, no bus service etc.
A few fools had to be rescued from they're cars. The rain has picked up again, and there is mud everywhere. Our back yard was a swimming pool this morning.
We were lucky that was all that happened to us. My Dad has about 2 feet of raw sewage water in his basement. One woman had the front of her house cave in.
