ACTIVEX

ActiveX controls turn still Web pages into dynamic, interactive sites by linking the Internet to other resources on your computer, such as sound players and movie viewers.

ANCHOR

text and graphics can link to places within the same direction. These links require two parts:the anchor and the link. The anchor identifies the place to jump to

BYTE

eight bits;the fundamental unit of personal computer data

CLIENT

is a computer/program that runs Internet software and receives resources from Internet hosts

DEDICATED LINE

A line that continuously connects the subscriber and the Internet.

DOMAIN

is the portion of an internet address (that which follows the @ symbol) that identifies the computer you are logging onto.

DOWNLOAD

to transfer a file from another computer to your computer

ETHERNET

a standard for local area network hardware, cabling, and transmission.

FIREWALL

Internal networks use the same protocol as the Internet, but outside connections to these networks are prevented by security measures

FTP

is a computer program used to transfer files from one computer to another.

GATEWAY

is a program or service that knows how to convert input from one type of system to another type of system (or provide linkage between 2 systems such as Lan's).

GUI

is a generic name for any computer interface that uses graphics, windows, and a pointing device.

HOST

is a central computer that other computers log onto for the purpose of sharing and exchange of information.

HTML

stands for Hypertext Markup Language, used to create WWW pages.

HTTP

stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, used to transfer Web pages between computers.

HYPERTEXT

an interlinked document structure that allows you to jump freely from one topic or document to another.

ISP

stands for your Internet Service Provider

JAVA

is a computer language resembling C++/C which can be incorporated into Web pages for special effects

LAN

is a network linked together by physical cables or short-haul connections,with a span that is generally less than one mile

NETWORK

is a group of computers or other devices connected in such a way that they are able to share information and resources
