Dale began racing in 1977 in the Limited Sportsman Division at Hickory Motor Speeday where his father, Ned Jarrett two time Nascar Champion, once was the track promoter.
Dale's first Winston Cup Race he started 24th and finished 14th at Martinsville, Virginia 4/29/84.
Claimed his first Winston Cup Pole Position on 2/19/95 for the Daytona 500, his 229th start.
Finished fourth in the 1993 Winston Cup Standings for (Joe Gibbs Racing).
Finished 13th in the Winston Cup Series Championship standings in 1995, When he led 324 laps, including 119 in the final six race's.
Scored his first Winston Cup Victory on August 18, 1991 in the Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan in his 130th start (Woods Brothers Racing), also won the 1993 Daytona 500 (Joe Gibbs Racing), the 1994 Mello Yello 500 at Charlotte (Joe Gibbs Racing), the 1995 Miller Genuine Draft 500 at Pocono (Robert Yates Racing), and the 1996 Daytona 500 (Robert Yates Racing).
Dale joined Robert Yates Racing in 1995 while fellow driver Ernie Irvan recovered from life threatening injuries suffered at Michigan in August 1994.
Debuted for Yates new Quality Care/Ford Credit team in February 1996 by winning the Busch Clash and Daytona 500.
In his first year with Quality Care/Ford Credit sponsorship, He finished a career high third in the Nascar Winston Cup Championship behind Terry Labonte and Jeff Gordon.
Won four times in 1996, including Daytona 500, Coca Cola 600 (Charlotte), Brickyard 400 (Indy), and GM Goodwrench 400 (Michigan). First Ford Driver to win the Brickyard 400 and first driver to ever win Daytona and Brickyard in the same year.
Was eligible for 1996 Winston Select Million at Darlington, and led for much of the race before sliding in another cars oil and hitting the wall.
Has scored 11 victories in Nascar Busch Series competition through 1997, a former Busch Series regular who will compete in a limited schedule of Busch events because of sharing his ride with his son Jason Jarrett.
Dale had a career high seven wins in 1997, and came in second in the Championship Points race, to first place Jeff Gordon. His wins were Primestar 500 (Atlanta), TranSouth 400 (Darlington), Pennsylvania 500 (Pocono), Goody's Headache Powder's 500 (Bristol), Exide Nascar Select Batteries 400 (Richmond), UAW-GM Quality 500 (Charlotte), and Dura Lube 500 (Phoenix).
Dale won the Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on October 11th 1998 for his 18th career win. Along with his win there he came away with the Winston No Bull 5 Million Dollar Bonus. His total earnings for that race were $1,110,125.Way To Go Dale!!
