Descendants
of
Hugh McGuire (c1788-1872)
&
Jane Gougherty (c.1800-1875)

My first introduction to genealogy began many years ago while reading "Roots" by Alex Haley. However, the catalyst for this research was my maternal Grandmother, Lily Grace May Cornwell-Joynt born October 5,1899 in London, England.

It is not enough to know just a dry collection of dates and names, but as pieces of our ancestors' lives becomes known to each of us, these pieces connect together to give us a glimpse of the past, not possible in any other way.

Pride in our family ancestry, is pride in ordinary people, who, in our hearts and minds, become extraordinary.

Our Ancestors

If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row
Would you be proud of them or not
Or don't you really know?
Some strange discoveries are made
In climbing family trees
And some of them you know, do not
Particularly please.
If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
There might be some of them perhaps
You wouldn't care to know.
But there's another question, which
Requires a different view.
IF you could meet your ancestors
Would they be proud of YOU?

Hugh McGuire (County Meath) and Jane Gougherty came to Canada circa 1844-1845 and settled in Bagot Twp, Renfrew County, Ontario with their ten Irish born children.

I believe because of the age difference between Jane & Hugh, and the age difference between the first and second born children that Jane Gougherty may have been Hugh's second wife. The eleventh child, John McGuire was born in Ontario and is my Great Grandfather.

Their Children

Michael McGuire (bcirca1813 d1897)(County Dublin) m Bridget Kennelly circa 1853
Patrick McGuire(c1824)
Catherine McGuire(c1825) m Alexander McDonald Nov 27,1846
Mary McGuire (c1827) m Matthew Devine Feb 12,1850
Francis McGuire (c1828) m 1. Catherine Bannar circa 1860 2. Anne McCaffrey in Perth
Hugh McGuire (c1830)
James McGuire (c1832) m Ann Waters Jul 6,1856
Ann McGuire (c1834)
Margaret McGuire (c1836)
Frances (Fanny) McGuire (c1840)
John McGuire (c1846-Nov 30,1896)(Ontario) m Catherine Gaudette Oct 8,1866 - John McGuire is my Great Grandfather.

My research has concentrated primarily on John McGuire's descendants. However, I am currently researching the descendants of all the McGuire children born in Ireland and their descendants..
