My Grandfather told me the story of his people. His
Grandfather, or Great Grandfather came from IRELAND,to Va, to NC, to Tenn. His Grandfather James 'Jimmy' McGuire, is buried in Tennessee. They lived in Williamson, County, Tennessee,
near Franklin. He also told me his family 'had a lot of
land taken from them.' Of course, now I wish I had ask him more
about this, but I was only 15 or so at that time.
He knew his grandmother, but didn't think he knew her
name, saying that he always called her 'grandmother.' He
had an Aunt 'Rachel', who married and moved away.(Rachel is the
name of his Grandmother, he forgot his Aunt Rebecca's name, who married and moved to East Tenn.)
My Grandfather remembered the day his Grandmother, Rachel Cannada (McCutchan) McGuire died, but not the date. The McCutchan Family Tree (On the side it says MAIN PAGE, click on The Family Tree, Rachel's Ancestor is "Tree John McCutchen",p44 of 62pages. Rachel (McCutchan) & James McGuire, are on page 49 & 50.) When Grandfather was young, he had been watching a certain peach on the tree, which seemed to be getting riper than the others. Each day he would check on the same peach. One day, he decided it was ripe, he picked it and took it inside to his Grandmother, she ate it and said to him, "Mighty fine, Johnny, Mighty fine." Rachel McGuire, died that evening. (I think he may have been between 5-10 years old. He was born in Wi.Co.,Tenn. in 1872.) Grandfather recalled her death, but he was too young to remember the day or year. He said his Father, John White McGuire, had five brothers and five sisters. He recalled all his Uncle's names, but didn't remember all of the Aunt's names. He said he knew Jane McGuire, best of all his Aunts because she didn't marry and lived with the family. He said Uncle Will (William A.) didn't marry. |

(1)Thomas M.,(2)Mack,(3)John White,(4)George,(5)William A.,(6)Samuel B.(7)Elizabeth C.(8)Rebecca, (9)Jane, and (10)Sarah. (My daughter found Sarah's marriage record, along with Thomas' in some microfilm.) I think 'Mack' could be a nickname, or he may have died young.) By comparing Ruth (Baker) Miller's, Family Bible of George McGuire, and the 1850 U.S. Census of Tenn., it looks like JAMES McGUIRE, was born June 8, 1782, and RACHEL was born on January 17, 1795. 1850 Census-Tennessee,p.228: McGUIRE, James 64, Rachel 55, Elizabeth 38, Jane 30, Rebecca 28, William 18, Samuel 15, James from Va. McGuire, Sarah had married Freeman Johnson All accounted for except John White, Mack, and one girl. John W.McGUIRE is in the "Index to the 1850 Census" at Will.282 13th Civ. His father, James McGUIRE is at Will.283 13th Civ. Yet I couldn't find him in the actual 1850 Census. (Thanks, to the Geno. Librarian in Wi.Co, Tenn. for finding him for me.) He is in the Household of #605, Cabinet Maker, John Andrews, next door, or across the street from James and Rachel McGuire. John White McGuire was 25 in the 1850 Census. I think James McGUIRE's Parents are: THOMAS McGUIRE & JANE DOBBINS, mar. 1770, lived in Rowan/Iredell Co. North Carolina! Their Children are: John, Agnes Nancy, Mary, Sarah, Thomas, James, Jiney (Virginia), Peggy (Margaret), Becky (Rebecca), Betsy (Elizabeth), and Sintha (Cynthia). IS this THOMAS McGUIRE's Father, JOHN McGUIRE? (Compare all those names with James & Rachel's children.) Thanks to Jim McGuire, for the Census of Jane & Thomas McGUIRE James McGuire spent over 60 years in WILLIAMSON Co.,TENNESSEE, near FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE. He married Rachel Cannada (McCutchan), there November 22, 1810. I have a copy of their actual marriage certificate. That is where I got the spelling of McCutch(A)n. They had eleven children, or more. He died and is buried there, yet I haven't been able to find out when he died and where he is buried. TAXES TENNESSEE McGuire,Alegany Wi-1815; McGuire,James Wi-1815.IS ALEGANY MCGUIRE, the Rev. NORTH CAROLINA, McGuire, Allegania, to Sarah Holliday, June 27, 1782 (NOTE: That puts Aleghaney McGuire in the same County of North Carolina, as THOMAS & JANE (DOBBINS) MCGUIRE, the year 'Our James McGuire' was born, and the same year 'their' son, James McGuire was born. I think they are one and the same James McGuire!) In a book,"LET THE DRUMS ROLL" p.136, Alleghany McGuire was born August 6,1757 in Cumberland Co., Virginia, where he was living when he volunteered for service in 1776. He entered service under Captain Charles Scott and was appointed orderly sergeant. They marched to Williamsburg, then to York, and then to Hampton, where McGuire could see the "British lying in the Bay from the Steeple." The next year his father moved to Henry County, where McGuire again volunteered in 1777 under Captain Burwell Reeves. The company marched to Salisbury, North Carolina, where Lieutenant Choin assumed command. They then marched to join General Lincoln's army in South Carolina. Captain Dogett then took command of the company, and McGuire continued as orderly sergeant. The company fought in the Battle of Stono, where Captain Dogett was wounded. McGuire stayed with him until he died and helped to bury him. Shortly afterwards, McGuire served as a substitute for his uncle, Stenard Richardson. During this tour of duty, he was in the Battle of Gate's Defeat. After the war McGuire married and moved to the frontier of Georgia (Elbert County) and served as an Indian spy for about two years. He moved to Maury County, Tennessee about 1809, where he was still living when he applied for a pension on June 30, 1833. He was allowed $105 per year for nine months' service as a private and fifteen months as a sergeant in the Virginia Line. On November 6, 1839 a jury to "inquire into the state of mind" of Alleghany McGuire found that "he is a lunatic and unable of managing his property." He moved shortly thereafter to Hardin County, Tennessee with his son, Holladay McGuire. On June 28, 1843 he applied for a transfer of his pension to McNairy County, Tennessee, stating that he had "previously lived in Hardin County, but now lives with son in McNairy County." 1820 Williamson Co., Tenn. McGuire, Eli 40, Rebecca 31, M.J.7,male; S.H.5,male; M.A.1,female,Mo-9-194.) I need help finding who 'our' Rebecca married. NOTE: By this time, Thomas McGuire and family, and George McGuire had moved to Cook Co., Texas. John McGuire had married Mary Jane Clanton, and was spending a lot of time near her people in the next County, Rutherford. Elizabeth had married, but she and Sallie are back in the household of her father, James McGuire. The Civil War was about to begin. Thanks to J.R. Swim and Deborah McCullough, (They are cousins), and Descendents of THOMAS McGUIRE, for the information on THOMAS and MARTHA McGUIRE, after 1850, and their Descendents. Thanks to Ruth (Baker) Miller, a Descendent of GEORGE McGUIRE, for the information on GEORGE McGUIRE and Family, after 1850. From the Family Bible of George McGuire! Father and Mother of George McGuire; James McGuire b. June 8, 1782, and Rachel C. McGuire b. Jan. 17,(rest of date, unable to read.) George McGuire b. April 28, 1827, Williamson Co., Tennessee. (Apparently he left Tennessee, when Thomas & Martha McGuire, went to Texas, not long after 1850. George was living with Thomas & Martha in Wi.Co., Tenn. in 1850. (BDMcD) The first account, Ruth has of him in Texas, is when he married in Atacosa Co.,the Town of Pleasanton, Texas, to Aramintha Angeline Ballard, Feb. 28, 1859. They lived there, until George joined the Civil War in 1861. He belonged to the 32nd Texas Calvary. Killed on the Battlefield, May 18, 1864, Simsport, La. (Ruth has a letter written from the Battlefield the day George was killed, to his wife, from his wife's brother. George's wife was expecting their third child, when he was killed. He is burried on the Battle- field at Norwood Plantation, Simsport, La. The Service Record for George McGuire, said he was 5'6" tall and had Blond Hair and Blue Eyes. Ruth has visited the Grave, in Lousiana. "WILLIAMSON COUNTY CONFEDERATES",p122 32ND TENNESSEE INFANTRY CO.D. WILLIAM A. McGUIRE Mustered in at Camp Trousdale Nov. 2, 1861. Elected second corporal. Last account of Elizabeth (McGuire) Leathers was in 1860, when she was back in the household of her father, James McGuire, and had Sallie Leathers, (Theophilus' sister), with her. (T.H. Leathers mar. Mary Turner, Dec. 9, 1869 in Hickman, Tenn.) Rebecca McGuire, had married and moved to East Tennessee. George McGuire, had moved to Texas, married, was killed in the Civil War, left three children. MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS, WILLIAMSON CO., TENNESSEE VOL.8, P.52: In a "Deposition of John McGuire. I rented part of Sam Andrew's farm from John Andrews for $225 in 1869. I rented about 72 acres. I planted about 45 or 46 acres in cotton." The very next paragraph, same page: "Deposition of William McGuire. I have known the Sam Andrews farm about 20 years. There is something over 200 acres in it. There is about 80 or 90 acres of tillable land." (NOTE: Two paragraphs below, is a quote by George Andrews, County Surveyor for Williamson Co.:) "The Federal Army took possession of this country in 1862/3/4." April 8, 1872, in Williamson Co., Tennessee, near Franklin, my Dear Grandfather was born: John Webb McGUIRE. Parents: John White McGUIRE and Mary Jane (CLANTON) McGUIRE. Siblings: James Dudley McGUIRE, Jesse McGUIRE, d./bur. Tenn., Maggie Jane McGUIRE, and Samuel Mansfield McGUIRE. Not long after 1870, James McGUIRE, died, and is buried in Tennessee. Not long after John Webb McGUIRE was born in 1872, the family moved to Rutherford Co. Tennessee. Where the youngest child of John White McGUIRE and Mary Jane (CLANTON) McGUIRE, was born, Sarah Thomas McGuire, in 1874. (I think he was named after someone very dear to Mary Jane.) (My Aunt Dovie, John Webb McGuire's oldest daughter,is very alert(year 2000), and insists that Rachel McGUIRE, and daughter Jane McGUIRE, moved with John White McGUIRE and wife Mary Jane and family to Arkansas. She believes both Rachel Cannada (McCUTCHAN) McGUIRE, and her son John White McGUIRE, and probably Jane McGUIRE, are buried in Arkansas! Aunt Dovie, said she remembers hearing her father, and his youngest brother, Uncle Tommy (S.Thomas McGUIRE), talk about it, and she remembers Uncle Tommy going to Arkansas, to visit the graves, and came back worried that 'the creek might rise, and wash the graves away!' I talked by phone (early 1999), to to the Caretaker of Minnow Creek Cemetary in Johnston Co., Arkansas. He said he knew Sam McGUIRE, but the others I ask about were not in Minnow Creek, where Samuel Mansfield McGuire, is buried, unless they are in unmarked graves! MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS WILLIAMSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE Volume 7,p.113: (NOTE: The date on the par. above this one, is July 31, 1909.) Par.4: "Deposition of W.A. McGUIRE, age 78 years - I live at Arrington on Big Harpeth. I was born and raised there and lived there except during the War and the two years that I was in Bedford County. I have known Mr. Starnes since I was a boy. He was older than me. I lived at Mr. Starnes about a year, the same year Etta was married. I was putting some ceiling and floors in the house. I live with Mr. Andrew Hunter now. Mr. Hunter rents the place from John Pinkston. I heard Mr. Starnes say that John was wild and he was afraid if he gave him any property that he would run through it. I have heard talk of John Pinkston taking the millet seed and wagon and mules to Nashville; getting the money and skipping out." Next par. "Mrs. Etta Newsom was asked about Mr. W.A.McGUIRE. She was asked if he was living around through the community as virtually a charity patient and she replied she had not seen him in sometime and did not know. John Pinkston came to the house and told Papa and me he got the mules from Cousin Bill Yarborough. They were taking to Nashville and sold when he left with the millet seed." (NOTE: Apparently William A. McGUIRE, chose to stay in Tenn., after his entire family had either died, or left the country. Remember he was left crippled from typhoid in the Civil War.) So, Jesse McGUIRE, son of John White McGUIRE, and Grandson of James McGUIRE, is 'probably' buried either in Williamson Co., or Rutherford Co., Tennesse, before 1870. (Rutherford being the birthplace of his Mother, Mary Jane (CLANTON) McGUIRE.) James McGUIRE was 'probably' buried in Williamson Co.,sometime after 1870. Mack is still not accounted for. Don't know who Rebecca married. William A McGuire, was still living in Williamson Co., at the age of 78, in 1909. He is most likely buried in that county. Some think Rachel Cannada (McCUTCHAN) McGUIRE is buried in Tennessee, yet the Descendents of her grandson, John Webb McGUIRE, think she is buried in Arkansas, along with John White McGUIRE, and most likely Jane McGUIRE, probably in unmarked graves. (NOTE: If anyone can provide proof on any of my McGUIRE Branch, I would really appreciate it, if you would send me an email.) Barbara |
