Last But Not Least
1 Cor 1:10-15
10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that all of you agree with one another
so that there may be no divisions among you
and that you may be perfectly united
in mind and thought.
11 My brothers, some from Chloe's household
have informed me that there are quarrels among you.
12 What I mean is this: One of you says,
"I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos";
another, "I follow Cephas", still another, "I follow Christ."
13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?
Were you baptized into the name of Paul?
14 I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you
except Crispus and Gaius,
15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. (NIV)
When we divide ourselves into denominations,
we are doing the same thing the Corinthians were doing,
dividing Christ,
but if it weren't for traditions, there would be no divisions.
I follow the Baptist. I follow the methodist,
I am holiness, I'm a catholic, etc.
Matt 15:1-11
1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law
came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
2 "Why do your disciples break the tradiion of the elders?
They don't wash their hands before they eat!"
3 Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God
for the sake of your tradition?"
4 For God said, "Honor your father and mother"
and "Anyone who curses his father or mother
must be put to death."
5 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother,
"Whatever help you might otherwise have recieved from me
is a gift devoted to God,"
6 he is not to honor his father with it.
Thus you nulify the word of God
for the sake of your tradition.
7 You hypocrites! Isiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 "These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain; their teachings
are but rules taught by men."
10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said,
"Listen and understand.
11 What goes into a man's mouth does not make him unclean,
but what comes out of his mouth,
that is what makes him unclean. (NIV)
Mark 7:5-9
5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus,
"Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders
instead of eating their food with unclean hands?
6 He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites;
as it is written: "These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are but rules taught by men.
8 You have let go of the commanments of God
and are holding on to the traditions of men."
9 And he said to them:
"You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God
in order to observe your own traditions!" (NIV)
Seventy-five percent of christianity today is nothing more
than a traditional fundamentalism, the same as it was in Jesus' day.
The teachings of the scribes and pharisees
was nothing more than rules taught by men.
That's what fundamentalism is,
rules taught by men,
of course now they don't call it the christian way,
do do this, and don't do that.
God looks at whats in your heart and imputes righteousness
to you based on your faith, nothing else.
Fundamentalism is self righteousness and will not take you to heaven,
but it will take you to hell.
