Did I ever tell you kids the story about when I was in the army. I would get a pass from the base and come home. I was in Florida for a while, and in Maryland, and in New Jersey. I'd take the train home and I'd have to change trains in New York. |
I'd come in to Pennsylvania station and I'd have to walk all the way to Grand Central Station to get the train to go to Lawrence. In the winter it would be so cold out and no matter what you did, you had a hard time keeping warm. So on the way to Grand Central, I would pass the street vendors. They'd be out there selling all kinds of stuff. Coming off a long train trip, you'd be hungry. I would always look for the guy with the chestnuts. | ![]() |

He had this little stove on his push cart and you could smell those chestnuts roasting for a mile away. And for ten cents I could get a little paper bag filled with the hot chestnuts. So I'd buy a couple of bags and put them in my pockets. And as I'd walk the rest of the way to the station I'd eat the chestnuts, and as you're peeling and eating them, your hands would stay warm. By the time I got to Grand Central, they'd all be gone. |
I really used to enjoy them. They were nice and hot and you'd be cold. I'll never forget that. |
