MOORE KEYS LODGE 2519 E.C.
‘ORDERING THE CHAOS’
The Brethren of Moore Keys Lodge as a fund-raising venture and also to contribute to the Jamaican scene of Masonic art commissioned the Curator of the National Galley of Jamaica to produce a work of art reflecting those two themes.  We are now proud to present the result for acceptance by the world in general and Masonic Brethren in particular. A description of the work is best stated in the words of the artist: -

“In one of my boxes from the mid eighties, which I called the Apollo Box, a real compass was used, forming a stable equilateral triangle, as an ordering principle.  The same thing basically happens in this triptych, except here I use an image which has been usurped by masons, I suspect ever since it was created, Blake’s Ancient of Days who within the perfect form of the circle, implying divine clarity, supreme reason, uses his compass to impart reason on the mortal world”.

“This image of Blake’s which I have appropriated, is jointed by another Blake image, used in both of the outer panels where the bow and arrow (note the string of the bow stretched forms a triangle like the compass) replaces the compass.  The image is Blake’s Route of the Rebel Angles, an illustration for Milton’s Paradise Lost.  The image is the visual counterpart to Blake’s famous lines from his Milton of 1804-8”:

Bring me my bow of burning Gold
Bring me by Arrows of Desire
Bring me my spear; Oh clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of Fire.

“So much for the origin of some of the imagery.  But I am sure what you really want to hear is what does it all mean.  What does it mean to use here, today? Ordering the Chaos is what I call it.  And the work is really a plea for a restoration of sanity, or order, of reason in our lives, in our country”.

“What the work is saying, is that the age old balance between Dyonissiac and Appolonian principles, is out of whack.  Dionyssus rules”. We are on the verge of Chaos.

“Order, Reason, the Apollonian virtues need to be invoked to restore some semblance of harmony to our country.  And it is incumbent upon organizations like this Masonic lodge and upon like minded bodies to play a role in this restoration of Reason…in this Regaining of Paradise. That is the meaning of the work in a nutshell.  Ordering the Chaos”.

The work is a collage, created in part with laser print technology, and then printed again as a limited edition laser print.  It is in three parts and as in the original and framed example here, is meant to be exhibited as a triptych.  Each work is hand signed and numbered by the artist.  To further ensure their authenticity each work has been embossed with a historic seal of the lodge.
