Andrews Pro K-9 Training has been working hard at developing a style of Police K-9 Training that trains the human officer along with the K-9. Why purchase a dog fully trained and hope for the best when you can have your handler's knowledge and K-9's performance develop alongside each other? The bond between human and K-9 is extremely important, and while the bond usually develops well when an adult K-9 is purchased for a department, using this method insures that the bond is there before the K-9's first day on duty. Listed below are some of the steps involved in the process.
The department and potential handler are interviewed at length to determine the specific characteristics the dog should have and the needs of the department
Current litters undergo extensive temperament testing until the right pup is found and purchased
The pup spends the next eight weeks becoming thoroughly socialized and introduced to the entire department and the world at large (socialization is one of the key aspects to K-9 training, an aspect often overlooked by many trainers)
Obedience begins at sixteen weeks, with the pup making weekly visits to the department and having weekly training sessions with the handler
Once the dog and the handler have mastered the basics, the more advanced stages of the training can begin. Weekly visits with the handler and the department continue, so everyone can see the dog's progress
As training progresses, the K-9 will soon move to his new home with the handler and continue training with Andrews Pro K-9 on a routine basis, including joining in with department practices
Once the K-9 has earned his badge, he and his handler are ready to begin patrol together the same day, with no adjustment period to interfere in the timing of duty
