The following poem was written by David's Grandmother, Roberta.
Christmas Day, 1995
This was a day for remembering
For today we were missing one
What a void in our hearts
Yet today there are 4 little ones
The legacy that you left behind
They were the center of your universe,
but the Lord needed you
Your work here on earth was done.
God gave us 4 little ones
to fill the void left in our hearts.
Each day is a day remembering
The high seas that you sailed.
The deeds you did for others,
The optimism and words of wisdom
For one who was so young.
But the Lord needed you,
your work on earth was done.
But God gave us 4 little ones
to fill the void left in our hearts.
Each day is a day for remembering
Your hopes, your dreams, your goals, your Harley
Your smile and the pleasure you brought to others.
Sometimes it feels like you are still sailing
the high seas for us and your country.
God knew your work here was done
and called you home.
But He left us 4 little ones
to fill the void in our hearts.
Each day is a day for remembering
And, Grandson, this is the first Christmas
we didn't hear your voice
But you were in our hearts
and I am sure each had a different
and happy memory of the days gone by.
To me, you will always be the brightest
and shiniest star in the sky and I thank God
For the 4 little ones left to fill the void in our hearts.
Each day is a day for remembering.
Grandson, the years are flying by and if it be God's will
We will meet you in the sky.
In the meantime, we pray we will be a pillar of strength
to help the 4 little ones grow to be strong
in wisdom, love, and knowledge just like you.
The 4 little ones left to us to help fill the void in our hearts.
For no greater love hath a man than to lay down his life for his family.
Written for the family in memory of David A. Gugel, son, brother, grandson and father, you will always be in our hearts. We love you.
