08/11/2000, Friday - Nebraska Trip. School News.
(age: 6 years, 5 months, 24 days)
We just got back from a trip to visit Grandma and Granddad in Nebraska. We celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and got to see lots of family from all over. Nicole and Christopher enjoyed seeing their cousins. Nicole and Hana always play really well together. As usual, there were some scuffles over sharing toys, etc., but overall I think they had fun. You can see how the younger ones are growing up and changing each time we get together. Now they're doing more roll playing together as opposed to just playing side-by-side.

Nicole was the only one old enough to go horseback riding at the state park. So, one morning, she and I skipped off and went for a ride. It was great. Nicole did really well and loved the experience. The terrain is forested and hilly. Very beautiful. We also saw a deer cross our path as well as a young coyote and rabbits. Nicole told me a few weeks back that she couldn't decide between being a cowgirl or an artist. This may sway her more toward cowgirl.

We got good news in the mail. Nicole has been accepted in the talented and gifted program at school. We're excited about it because it will really open up more opportunities for her and keep her more interested in school. School starts next Monday. Today Nicole meets her new teacher.

Nicole's first day of First grade (8/14/2000)08/14/2000, Monday - First Day of First Grade. Island Girl.
(age: 6 years, 5 months, 27 days)
Today is Nicole's first day of first grade. I went with her to her school, saw her room and met her teacher. She was very excited and looked so cute sitting at her desk with all her new supplies.

Update: Nicole had a great day at school. Tina went in to help with lunch and said Nicole looked very happy everytime she saw her. I talked to Nicole before bed and she told me that during one recess she got homesick and was holding tears in her eyes. She's still getting used to the idea of going to school for the whole day.

Yesterday, Nicole's Sunday School craft was to make an edible "burning bush" as their snack. It contained coconut, which she said she didn't eat because she didn't like it. It told her that I liked coconut and she replied with, "Well, I'm not an ISLAND kind of girl!" Sometimes kids say the funniest things.

08/18/2000, Friday - First Week of School.
(age: 6 years, 6 months, 1 day)
Nicole at her First grade desk (8/14/2000)
Well, Nicole is finishing up her first week of school. Tonight is a pool party that's supposed to be really fun. Right now my internet thermometer says its 107 degrees near my house. I hope that water's cool tonight!

I think Nicole is really enjoying her class, but there are some things she doesn't like right now too. They've been going out to recess quite a bit this week and it's been very hot. I think they do it because the kids aren't ready to sit all day long just yet, but the playground is so hot with little shade. I heard they won't go out as much next week and it'll be much nicer once October comes.

There is one boy in Nicole's class that doesn't sound prepared for first grade. He has been throwing fits when his mother leaves and has even run out of the classroom. He's already been sent to the principle. It sounds like he mostly misses his mom rather than being a trouble maker. Hopefully he'll settle in and be a good member of the class (one can hope).

Nicole was very pround this week to be the first recipient of a good behavior certificate. And yesterday her best friend in the class (Allie) got the certificate too. I think the first week they really concentrate on behavior and discipline so the children are ready to study and learn. Besides that it seems that they're off to a slow start (talking about the alphabet, etc.). I guess it is just the first week. I shouldn't expect they'd be reading "War and Peace" just yet. It sounds like the teacher is doing a lot of skills assessments as well.

08/25/2000, Friday - Doing Well In School.
(age: 6 years, 6 months, 7 days)
Nicole Davis (8/23/2000)
Nicole is finishing her second week of first grade. Her teacher told Tina that Nicole's class is by far the most advanced first grade she has ever taught. As I've said before, Nicole's kindergarten teacher did an amazing job.

Nicole came home very proud the other day. They had announced her name over the loud speaker to the whole school. They were announcing the students that had participated in the library's reading program over the summer and she gets to attend an ice cream party as a result.

Yesterday Nicole was the "special person" of the class. All the other students drew pictures for her and wrote her notes. We went through them last night. Very cute. It really made her feel great. She also brought home a math paper with her first 100%.

08/29/2000, Tuesday - Trusting Daddy. Bible Puzzles
(age: 6 years, 6 months, 11 days)
I read a book to Nicole a while ago that was about a dad and his little girl. The dad would show the little girl all kinds of little creatures from the garden. The moral of the book came from the little girl who said, "I know nothing that comes from my daddy's hands will hurt me." Nicole really took that to heart and asked me later if I could take her out and show her something from our yard. There was no time at the moment, but last weekend while mowing I found a five inch long snake skin. I brought Nicole out and held it in my hands to show her. True to her word, she trusted me and bravely took the skin herself. It was a neat daddy-daughter moment.

Nicole has been asking really good Bible questions. The other night we read a passage from Revelations that said Jesus was coming back soon. Nicole looked at me and said "That's not true. It's been a long time and He hasn't come back." I reassured her that it was okay and that He would come back in His good time. No one knows when He will come back, but God will always be with us until then.

08/31/2000, Thursday - Talented & Gifted Class
(age: 6 years, 6 months, 13 days)
Yesterday was Nicole's first Talented and Gifted class. She seemed to really like it. They're studying "ology". The first one is biology. Next week they'll do Mammology.
