Here is
what I presently know about the people mentioned in the
letters. Most of this information comes from the
information presented in the letters, census records, and
military pension records. I took a trip to Gallia County
in November of 97 and found lots of information along
with the gravesites of several people. If anyone knows
any more, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Isaac Overall - Author of most of the
letters. Husband of Jane Overall and son of Jacob
Overall. He lived with Jane on a small piece of
property overlooking the Ohio River in
Chambersburg, Gallia County, Ohio (Lot 11,
Section 19) which he bought for $50 on December
21, 1859. He was a private in Company I, of the
36th Ohio Volunteer Infantry serving
from 1/8/1862 until he died of disease (lung
fever or diptheria) at Carthage Tennessee on
June 6th, 1863 at the age of about 34.
He was born in Tennessee in about 1829 as the
oldest child of Jacob and Eliza Overall. His
military records list him as being 6' 1 1/2
inches tall. He is buried in Memphis Tennessee at
the Mississippi River Cemetery. When he died, he
left 4 young children with the youngest being
Jasper Newton Overall who was 3. |

Martha Jane
Proctor-Overall -
Wife of Isaac Overall. Everyone called her Jane.
This is her collection of letters. She was
married to Isaac on Sept 21st, 1851.
She was born in Virginia, probably Shenandoah
County. Her parents were John and Elizabeth
Proctor of Shenandoah County. I think we have found John's wife Elizabeth as
Betsy Smith. Adam Smith died in 1830 and his will names daughter Betsy Smith
now Betsy Proctor by marriage and son-in-law John Proctor. She also had lots
of sisters (see Nibert and Estep descriptions).
Before Isaac left
for the war, she had 4 children : Florence
Virginia (3/10/1854), Jacob Asbury (4/3/1856),
John William (6/7/1858), Jasper Newton
(5/12/1860) and at least 1 infant son who died
early. She remarried John Ginder on March 25th,
1866, about 3 years after the death of Isaac.
That was a short marriage because she died on
July 1st, 1870 at the age of 40. She
is buried at the Clay Chapel Cemetery overlooking
the Ohio River in Gallia County Ohio, between her
infant son and her youngest son, Jasper Newton
Overall, who died much later. Her tombstone reads
"Coming Home" "Martha J"
"wife of" "I Overall"
"Died" "July 1 1870" "40
yrs 7 mos 16 d". |
|
Florence Virginia Overall - Daughter of Isaac and Jane Overall.
Born March 10th, 1854 in Gallia
County. |
|
Jacob Asbury Overall - Son of Isaac and Jane Overall. Born
April 3rd, 1856 in Gallia County. In
1880, at the age of 24, he was living with Noah
Kinder and Elizabeth Overall-Kinder (Isaac's
sister). In 1900, he was in Columbus Ohio,
married to Jessie Overall (born 1857 in Ohio)
with no children. |
|
John William Overall - Son of Isaac and Jane Overall. Born
June 7th, 1858 in Gallia County. In
1880, he was living in Huntington WVa and was
single. In 1910, he was still in Huntington, but
was divorced. I have an old envelope addressed to
him in Huntington, WVa dated Sept 21, 1898.

|
Jasper Newton Overall - Son of Isaac and Jane Overall. Born
May 12th, 1860 in Gallia County. He is
the child of Isaac and Jane that is most
important to me because he is my gg grandfather.
He is actually mentioned in the letters and
referred to as "Naty" by Isaac. He
probably never remembered his father, Isaac,
because he was only about 7 months old when Isaac
left for the war and he was only 3 when his
father died. He was also only 10 when his mother,
Jane, died in 1870. On July 8th, 1879,
at the age of 19, he married Lovenia F. Ray in
Gallia County and they had a son, Charles H.
Overall on May 20th, 1881 while they
were living in Ohio Township, just south of Clay
Township. Charles H. is my great grandfather.
Jasper Newton died just 5 years later on May 29th,
1886 at the age of 26 leaving Lovenia with their
5-year-old son. Jasper was buried beside his
mother, Jane, in the Clay Chapel Cemetary just 17
days after his grandfather, Jacob Overall was
buried just a few feet away. His tombstone reads,
"JASPER N" "SON OF"
"ISAAC & J" "OVERALL"
"BORN" "May 12 1860"
"DIED" "MAY 29 1886" along
with what appears to be a bible verse. |
|
Lovenia F. Ray-Overall - Wife of Jasper Newton Overall and
mother of Charles H. Overall. On April 29th,
1889, 3 years after the death of Jasper, she
remarried Stephen K. Pollock. It is possible that
Charles H. Overall was raised in this family, but
I have no information. |
|
Jacob Overall - Father of Isaac Overall. He was born
in Tennessee in about 1805 and bought his first
property to farm (80 acres east 1/2 of lot 1253
in section 32) in Clay Township on Dec 3rd,
1849 for $300. On November 23rd, 1850
he sold the west 40 acres to Noah Kinder for
$190. Noah was married to Jacob's 18 year old
daughter Elizabeth. The 1850 census had Jacob
living in Chambersburg with his wife Eliza (45
from Tennessee), Isaac(21 from Tennessee), Louise
Tennessee(16 from Pennsylvania), Jane(14 from
Pennsylvania),Cyrus(12 from Pennsylvania), and
Hellen(6 from Pennsylvania). Louise died a year
later on June 18th, 1851 and was the
first Overall to be buried in the Clay Chapel
Cemetery. I don't know what happened to his wife,
Eliza, but Jacob remarried Elizabeth Gumel at the
residence of James Keer in Clay Township Ohio by
Rev. E. V. Bing on April 20th, 1862.
On October 6th, 1863 he paid $700 for
28 acres (in lot 1230) on the south side of
Chambersburg overlooking the Ohio River. He
divided the property and sold the lots, creating
the South Chambersburg addition, still known
today as Overall's Addition. I believe he later
moved to one of his lots. He died on May 12th,
1886 at the age of 81 and was buried in the Clay
Chapel Cemetery beside his daughter Louise
Tennessee. His other daughter, Elizabeth
Overall-Kinder is buried on his other side along
with her husband, Noah Kinder. On the other side
of 4 Kinder graves lies Jane, her infant son, and
Jasper Newton Overall who died only 17 days
later. His tombstone reads: "Jacob Overall
SR" "DIED" "MAY 12 1886"
"AGED" "81Y 4M 12D"
"When Jesus comes again" "his
faithful people to receive" "again his
kingdom reign". |
|
Elizabeth Gumel-Overall - Second wife of Jacob Overall. Her
parents were born in Ireland. She outlived her
husband Jacob. |
|
James H. Overall - Brother(?) of Isaac Overall. He was
born in Butler County Tennessee. He enlisted in
August, 1861 at Chambersburg and was a private in
Company I with Isaac He was listed as being
5'10" with gray eyes, dark hair and a light
complexion. He occupation was boatman
(Chambersburg was on the Ohio River and the
principal business was boat building). On
December 14th, 1861, he was promoted
to corporal, but on April 2nd, 1862 he
was reduced back to private to pay for 1 tin cup
and 1 tin plate. One of the letters talks about
his wounding at the battle in Lewisburg W Va in
May 1862. On September 6th, 1862 he
entered General Hospital in Georgetown DC as a
result of a wound or sickness during Company I's
operations during Bull Run or the beginning of
the Maryland Campaign. He stayed in that hospital
until January 22nd, 1862 when he was
admitted to Kalorama Hospital in Washington DC
where he died of smallpox on February 1st
1863. He is buried at the Military Asylum
Cemetary in DC. He is mentioned several times in
the letters, but as you read the letters, Isaac
did not know of his death for a few months. In
one of Isaac's last letters he mentions getting a
letter that Sarah wrote to James and burning it.
Isaac also mentioned in the letter that James
owed a little to the Company but the boys will
make up for it. |
|
Sarah Ann Kinder-Overall - Wife of James Overall. They were
married March 19th, 1856. A pension
record included a letter from her stating that
there were no living children from her marriage
although the 1860 census shows a 3 year old son,
Andrew, living with them. Pension records show
Sarah remarried on June 30th, 1869 in
Charleston WVa to Henry B. Whittaker, who died
January 31st, 1896. She died in
Winfield WVa on October 26th, 1916 at
the age of 84. |

Elizabeth M.
Overall-Kinder -
Sister of Isaac Overall and daughter of Jacob
Overall. She was born in 1832 in Tennessee. She
married Noah Kinder on July 19th, 1849
at the age of 17. Isaac called her
"Lib" and both she and Noah are
mentioned in the letters. Notice that it looks
like 2 of the Overall siblings (James and
Elizabeth) each married Kinders. The Overall and
Kinder families were neighbors during the 1850's
and 1860's. Noah and Lib had at least 9 children:
Samuel Kinder(1850-1850?-he is probably the
infant Kinder son buried in the Clay Chapel
Cemetary), Jacob H(1851?-1851), Louisa(1853-?),
Arabell(1854-?), John(1856-?), Helen(1860-?),
?daughter?(1864-?), Robert H(1869-1912), and
Charles R(1871-1917). Noah and Lib were still
living in Gallia County in 1880 at the ages of
60(Noah) and 48(Elizabeth). Along with their own
children, Jacob Asbury Overall (son of Isaac and
Jane) was living with them in 1880. Lib died in
1923 at the age of 91. She is buried in the Clay
Chapel Cemetery with Noah, and beside her father,
Jacob Overall. Buried with her are much of her
family: Kinder infant son; Charles R Sgt 7 Ohio
Inf. Spanish American War b. Feb 22, 1871 d. Feb
17, 1917; Jacob H son of Noah and Elizabeth
d.July 29, 1851; Noah R b.1819 d.1882; and Robert
H b.1869 d.1912. |
|
Noah R. Kinder - Husband of Elizabeth Overall. He
lived on the 40 acres adjoining Jacob Overall on
Teens Run Creek. Noah and Lib's grave is in the
Clay Chapel Cemetery with much of their children.
The Kinder graves are between the graves of Jacob
and Louisa Tennesse Overall's graves; and the
graves of Jasper Newton Overall, Jane Overall and
her infant son. |
|
Martha Hellen
Overall-Dickey -
Sister of Isaac Overall. She was married to
Hamilton L. Dickey in Chambersburg by Rev. R.
Callaghan on November 7th, 1867.
Everyone called her Hellen. She was mentioned in
the letters. |
|
Hamilton L. Dickey - Husband of Hellen. |
|
H.T. Nibert - Nephew of Jane Overall. He served
with Isaac in the 36th Regiment. He
wrote the letter in June of 1863 informing Jane
of Isaacs death. I believe his first name
is Hugh. He survived the war because his
name was mentioned in an 1865 letter from
Janes sister, Lorena. I have received this valuable informaion from
some friends in Gallipolis: His name is Hugh Thomas
Nibert. His father was
Thoms Nibert who married Clara Proctor (Martha and Lorena's sister) in Gallia Co. in 1837.
Catherine is a sister of Clara. Catherine was married to George Allman when they came to Gallia Co.
about this same time.
Catherine had a son named James Franklin so she was probably married to ____ Franklin before she married
G. Allman.
Catherine and George lived in Chambersburg . George Allman died between 1850 and 1860 census.
Catherine is still in Chambersburg in 1880 but died before 1900.
In the letter dated April , 1866 "Aunt Can(?) and Aunt Clarn(?) could be Catherine? and Clara?
Hugh Nibert married Evelyn Coon (Kuhn) and had no children. Hugh is buried in Providence Cemetery. Evelyn 's brother
William Coon married Helen Kinder daughter of Elizabeth Overall Kinder.
Elizabeth is Isaac Overall's sister who married Noah Kinder. Another of Elizabeth's daugthers
Louisa, married John Chambers. I also have a picture of Hugh provided by my
friends in Gallipolis.

Andrew J. Overall - ??. He is mentioned in the letters,
but I dont know his relationship to the
other Overall's. He was maried to Ann Maria
Hamilton on September 10th, 1858. He
had a one year old son, Elbert in the 1860 Gallia
County census. It claims he was born in
Tennessee. He joined the 18th OVI Company I at
Camp Dennison, Ohio on October 16th,
1861 at the age of 21. He had light complexion,
hazel eyes, light hair, and was 5 feet 7 and 1/4
inches. The descriptive book says he was from Cab
Tenn. On May 20th 1863, he was wounded
or got sick at Murfeesboro Tn and entered the
hospital. He stayed in the Lousiville Ky hospital
for a few months and was transferred to the Camp
Dennison Hospital where he stayed until at least
February of 1864. He was discharged from the army
at the end of his long hospital stay. |
|
Will Shaw - At Blacks store in
Chambersburg. Mentioned in a letter. |
|
Wesley Overall - Owned a house that Isaac passed in
Tennessee and mentioned in a letter. |
|
Jasper Hanes - He was mentioned in a letter as being
with Isaac Overall in combat. |
|
Sallie Howell-Ray - Niece of Jane Overall. She lived in
Addison Champaign County, Ohio and wrote a few
letters to Jane. |
|
George Ray - Husband of Sallie Howell. Sally told
of their marriage in her letters. |
|
Wesley Martindill - Wrote letter to Mr. Clark detailing
the death of Isaac Overall. I have records of him
being in the 36th OVI, Company I. |
|
George Crook, Davol,
William Jones, Captain Nye, Captain Kelley - Officers of the 36th
Regiment. These names were mostly mentioned in
the Martindill letter. |
|
Lorena Estep - Sister of Jane Overall with children
Victory (or Victoria) Catherine(b.8/4/1855), Virginia Bell(b.1856),
Pheby Jane(b.1858) and
Ann Rebecca(b.1864). I have the following additional information from a book on the Estep's.
Victoria married 1/1/1871 to Henry McInterff son of Levi and Rebecca McInterff.
Virginia "Jennie" Estep married 9/17/1879 to A. M. Evans a tanner, son of Wm. H. and Adeline Evans.
Phoebe Jane Estep married 9/7/1879 to George C. Fry son of George and Magdaline Fry and 1/3/1884 to Peter Helsley son of Levi and Isabella Helsley.
Anna C. Estep married 8/25/1881 to John H. Ruby son of Isaac and Susan Ruby.
Lorena was born in 1824 as Lorena Proctor, so she was Jane's older sister. The Estep researchers
claim that Lorena was a nickname and her real name was Susan Proctor
at birth. Her
parents were John and Elizabeth Proctor. She
became a McKelvey through marriage, She married Lewis McElvey 3 July 1841
and later
married Harrison Estep on October 12th,
1854. When she wrote her letters in the 1860's,
she lived in Columbia Furnace, Shenandoah County,
Virginia. She wrote a letter that provides the
best clues to the relationships between all of
Janes siblings, nieces and nephews. She
wrote of her sister, Jane. "How oft I sit
and think of thee when I am far away and in my
mind thy image see as plain as open day"
|
|
Mary (Liz) Wetzel - Niece of Jane Overall with children
Emma, Willie and Franky. She also lived in
Columbia Furnace, Shenandoah County, Virginia and
wrote letters to Jane. |
|
Martin Wetzel - Husband of Liz. |
|
John W. Middleton - Nephew of Jane Overall with children
Sarah Jane and William Preston. He wrote a letter
from Wheeling, West Virginia with his wife. He
lived in Wheeling because that seems to be where
he went when he escaped the rebels. He is most
likely Lizs brother. |
|
Joshua M. Clark - According to Isaac's pension records,
he became guardian of Isaac's children on June 6th,
1866. He was a 1st lieutenant in
Company I at Summersville and was ordered to
Gallia County by General Brooks to recruit men.
He mustered Isaac on Jan. 8th 1862. |
