EARTHQUAKE IN TURKEY
earthquake in Turkey Two devastating earthquakes have hit Turkey in less than three months in the late 1999. The first - with its epicentre at Izmit in Turkey's heavily populated northwest - struck at 03:02 hours local time on 17 August. It left some 22,000 people dead and thousands more homeless. The second struck just 100km away on 12 November, killing hundreds more.

On 17 August and 12 November 1999, two earthquakes devastated the populated and industrial northwestern parts of Turkey. Although the exact number of deaths is unknown, the Turkish authorities report that over 22,000 people were killed and 49,000 people injured during both earthquakes. Although dozens of relief organizations responded quickly to the disasters, the road to recovery has been littered with the unsettling and sometimes destructive aftershocks. At least 1,268 aftershocks, measuring between three and six on the Richter scale, were reported since following the original quakes.
