History... 1922

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was founded by seven African American educators in 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. These visionaries were in the minority at their predominantly white institution and felt that there was a strong unfilled need for solidarity among African Americans, especially regarding the area of education, which was the cornerstone for the founders' motivation. The sorority spread and dedicated itself to organizing its growing structure for the first three years. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was incorporated in December of 1929. Founding Soror Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little was elected first basileus (presiding officer) of the sorority. Since then, Sigmas have expanded to become an international sorority with exemplary community service agendas and a common goal to uphold sisterhood, scholarship, and service. Our motto is,

"Greater Service, Greater Progress."

The Ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho take great pride in their image as intelligent, sophisticated women who are hard workers for their surrounding communities. The sisterhood is paralleled by no other, and the future looks bright for our beloved sorority.

Prominent Sorors include: Victoria Rowell, actress, Cynthia Horner, magazine editor, Leighann Lord, comedienne, Maysa, jazz artist, Rev. Willie T. Barrow, director of operations for Operation PUSH/ The Rainbow Coalition, Cheryl Broussard, financial advisor/author, Hattie McDaniel, first African American actress to receive an Oscar, April Sinclair, author, Tonya Lee Williams, actress, Brenda Joysmith, artist, Mother Love, actress/radio personality, and many, many more.

Gamma Mu Chapter The Baltimore metropolitan, or "city-wide" chapter, Gamma Mu, was chartered on May 9, 1964. Chartering sorors were:

Alice Sue Cooper Lee, first Gamma Mu Basileus,

Dorothy Redd Skinner

Ernestine Chance

Patricia Stewart

Rosa Lee Malone

The Gamma Mu Chapter encompasses all four-year undergraduate colleges in the region that do not have their own chapter. On December 5, 1998, sixteen women reactivated the chapter. Since that day, the chapter has participated in community service in the area and in stepshows here and abroad. Current members hail from The College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, University of Baltimore and Villa Julie College. Most recent community service projects include volunteering at the Village Learning Center during the school year, Walking in the Multiple Sclerosis Walk, holding an end-of-the-year clothing drive, and adopting a bus shelter on York Rd. We have stepped with the Baltimore Metropolitan Step Team in several events in the Maryland/DC/Virginia area to represent our sorority. We plan to continue to serve the community with volunteering and special programs such as Mwanamugimu Essay Contests, and Big Book Bag programs (see our national webpage for more information on our national programs) and to represent Sigma excellence in stepshows.

The current basileus (president) of the chapter is Maria Peters.

Sorors in the Gamma Mu Chapter prioritize academic achievement - we endeavor in diverse fields including business, medicine, law, education, and nursing among other fields. We participate in campus organizations such as Black Student Unions, NAACP, Theatre, Maryland Student Assembly, Pre-professional Societies, and many more. Gamma Mu, like Sigma Gamma Rho at large, is composed of women who aspire to reject the norms and aim for greatness. We are diligently progressive and trendsetting, yet down-to-earth and welcoming. We suggest that any woman considering Sigma Gamma Rho should have high standards for herself and for her achievements, because we set high standards for ourselves, and we have consistently focused on attaining our goals together. The Ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho are not in search of sisterhood - we embody sisterhood. In fact, true sisterhood is our best kept secret.
