Alpha Gamma Delta Comes to San Diego |
The San Diego Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta had an unusual start. We began in the early part of the 20th century as Gamma Phi Zeta, a local social sorority based at San Diego State Teachers' College (later San Diego State University). After World War II many Gamma Phi Zeta sisters felt the need to engage the world at large, to become a part of a larger organization. Thus talks began with many national sororities, but only Alpha Gam would initiate the alumnae members of Gamma Phi Zeta as Alpha Gams as well as establish an undergraduate chapter. In 1949 the alumnae of Gamma Phi Zeta and the colony pledge class of Alpha Gamma Delta's Delta Eta chapter were initiated together in a lovely ceremony. |
Today the alumnae from Gamma Phi Zeta and the colony pledge class are still involved in Alpha Gamma Delta along with all of their sisters who have come after them. With fundraising, keeping a local womens' and childrens' shelter well-stocked in baby clothes, and various fun social events such as the annual Christmas brunch, Night on the Town, and International Reunion Day, as well as fun Junior Circle activities for our under 35 sisters like sailing, camping, happy hours, and the annual MS Walk, the Alpha Gams in San Diego are making a difference in the world around them and are having a lot of fun doing it! |
