Why should you support S.U.C.C.E.S.S. (the United Chinese Community Enrichment Services Society – Vancouver)?

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is virtually a government agency

According to its 1997-1998 annual report, over 60% of the revenue of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. came from the three levels of government.  The federal government alone contributed over 50% of the revenue of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

In fact, the federal government also contributed to numerous advertising agencies in Quebec over the years with goals that can be comparable to S.U.C.C.E.S.S.  Given that we are proud citizens of Canada, we should follow the lead of our elected officials by contributing to S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is a registered charity, so your contribution is “tax-deductible”.  Indeed, we are so proud of how our governments (particularly politicians) spend our money; we should spend our own discretionary income to further support governments’ spending initiatives.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is a model democracy

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. follows the ideology of democratic centralism.  Its Board of Directors ensures that its “poorly educated” members know how to vote by pre-selecting a slate of model candidates.  Many people’s republics have run elections based on this model too.  Certainly, nothing can go wrong when you have competent and thoughtful current directors pre-choose future directors for you, right?

Most future directors are experienced current or former directors or have close relationship with the current Board.  After all, you do not want to mistakenly select a candidate, who is not endorsed by the current Board of Directors of S.U.C.C.E.S.S., do you?

Here is a copy of an election ballot for the Board of Directors of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.:

In 1998, as a celebration of its 25th anniversary and its years of contributions to the community, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. spent taxpayers’ money by putting advertisements on Chinese newspapers aimed at recruiting directors from all sectors of the society in the Lower Mainland.  S.U.C.C.E.S.S. encouraged individuals from diverse backgrounds to come forward in order to help S.U.C.C.E.S.S. serve the community.

Unfortunately, with the exception of three students, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. completely failed to attract any Chinese Canadian (outside of its Board slate) to run for the Board of Directors.  Nearly all candidates from the Board slate either have prior dealings with the Board or have served on the Board of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.  In fact, it is unfortunate that people would take the advertisements of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. seriously.  Otherwise, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. could have saved the time and effort by not having to host any election for the Board of Directors.

Hey, taxpayers’ money was spent on advertising firms in Quebec, so it is only fair that S.U.C.C.E.S.S. spent some taxpayers’ money in British Columbia for advertising purposes.  This was such a noble act aimed at enriching the economic well being of our society, as well as showcasing S.U.C.C.E.S.S. to the community.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is a good place to get recognized

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. produced many outstanding individuals.  Examples are as follows:

·        Angela Kan became a Citizenship Court Judge after serving as a S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Executive Director;

·        Mason Loh became a Queen’s Counsel after serving as a S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Chairman;

·        Lilian To (a long time S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Executive Director) received an honour from the City of Vancouver that the City is going to name a street after her.  Actually, it is good that somebody received such a great recognition for doing a good job as an employee of a “government agency”.

If you desire to receive honours similar to those conferred on the above individuals, be sure to support S.U.C.C.E.S.S!
