Illinois | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hey! My name is Ted Macon, and I am the new Illinois Association of Student Councils President. I am currently a senior at Carlyle High School and president of my local council. Our association did many great things this last year and there is still more to come in the current year. On May 3-5 we held the 63rd Annual IASC Convention at the Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago. The delegates took part in small group workshops, heard great speakers, had two awesome dances and of course, elected new officers. The new officers are: President- Ted Macon; 1st Vice-President- Amanda Weber; 2nd Vice-President- Andy Fruth; Secretary- Neha Datt; Treasurer- Bryan Clark; Reporter Editor- Ali Cirone; Convention Secretary- Lisa Elke. This summer the IASC will host our summer workshops at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. The workshop has two sessions, each one week long. The first session will be held July 16-20 and the second will be July 23-27. This week long workshop is designed to teach basic leadership principles, to build upon those leadership skills, and to give each delegate new ideas to return to their council and put to use. In January, the IASC will host its Advanced Workshop at Allerton House in Monticello, Illinois. This workshop focuses on finding your own personal leadership style and finding out more about yourself. The new board and I are looking forward to another great year with the IASC. We have lots of new and exciting ideas planned for the upcoming year, and I can't wait to get started. Respectfully submitted, Ted Macon, IASC State President |

Indiana | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Indiana has had a very successful spring. This year we held our Representative Assembly at a new site, the Horizon Center in Muncie, Indiana. The previous site had been at the Ball State University campus. We found that the new site was much more convenient and user friendly. We also selected the new members to our board, which we are very excited about. At our first meeting of the year, we received our first proposed budget from our State Convention Host School, Valparaiso High School. We were quite pleased with it and the funding that they have been promised from their community. Also, some IASC state committee members helped at Riley's Hospital Telethon at the beginning of June. The telethon raised over $5,600,000, including a joint contribution of over $713,000 from the IASP (which includes our Executive Committee along with the Elementary division). In May we had our delegates for the National Convention meet to prepare, all of whom were very eager and optimistic. This summer we have a few events planned. First, we will have a session to train students to present a workshop at November's state convention. Second, we are going to hold our state committee retreat on July 20-22. Indiana is very excited and confident about the coming year. Respectfully submitted, Jacob Benedict, IASC State President |

Things in Iowa are just fine. We are enthusiastic in the great state of Iowa because at the LEAD Conference Laura Gingrich was selected as the new Region 5 Student Representative. So we are all pumped about that and confident she will do fine. This summer we have our ILC (Iowa Leadership Camp) held on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa. This is a great experience for our students to gain valuable leadership experiences. Iowa is also going to begin a state wide project. Starting next year it will become an annual event. Next year's project is going to be a book drive. Student Councils from around the state will begin a book drive in their respective communities. This should be a great way for the state to get in full participation mode. I am hoping for a big turn out and that the State Project will become a standard part of Iowa's leadership experience. Respectfully submitted, Colin Currans-Sheehan, IASC State President |

Nebraska | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In the mid-west, oh yes, cuz we are the best. Thats a phrase that us Nebraskans use to describe our Student Councils. We've endured a lot, and will be enduring a lot more this year. From our eight districts putting on workshops, to our summer workshops, Nebraska is TRULY SERIOUS about Student Council. Most of our Districts hold two conventions a year; the spring one has been completed for the majority of them and they are planning for their fall conventions. State this year was held at Plattsmouth for the second year in a row. Next year it will be held in North Platte, and Omaha Bensen will host our 2003 State Convention. This summer we will be holding two Senior High, one JAM, and one Advisor Workshop at Wayne State College. Along with holding numerous conventions in Nebraska, we hold many fundraisers for our State Charity. This year our goal for Make-A-Wish (state charity) is $65,000, and for Help Hungry Kids (state service project) our goal is 10,000 pounds of food. This past year the Student Councils in Nebraska have had a few setbacks. Bevin Brown, our Executive Director announced that this will be his final year at the State Level for Student Council. Bevin has been a MAJOR asset to our Student Councils and will be missed greatly! Also the passing of our District 4 President Jerad Manzer on March 11, 2001 has put an everlasting dent in our hearts. Jerad had the greatest passion for Student Council and was helping us make our NASC even better. But due to heart complications, he will now be supervising us every step of the way. Besides having a busy year, our officers here on the State Level in Nebraska are putting Student Council first to make NEBRASKA THE BEST IN THE MID-WEST. Respectfully submitted, Keri Barels, NASC State President |

Ohio | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Well it's finally summer. School is out and there's no more daily homework, but for OASC this is our biggest time for teaching, learning and getting more of our state involved in the Ohio Association of Student Councils. Reflecting on our past year, it was a success. Our attendance at events was up, our retreats were successful, and the number of schools involved has increased. This past year was not our peak, just a stepping stone to our goals of where we would like to be in a couple of years. This new year for OASC starts with our Summer Workshops. These workshops are week long learning experiences where students can develop different skills to take back to there councils at home. The workshops, like every other event throughout the year, are available for middle level and high school students. After summer is over, the rest of our events are held throughout the school year for students to use as refreshers and opportunities to reunite. In the fall we have a Fall Regional and a Super Saturday which are day events and Fall Retreats which are weekend events. Then comes the winter where we offer Winter Retreats which are weekend events like the fall ones. After a brief brake we then have our annual State Conference which is held at a different school every year and is comprised of extensive programming in a short three days. After all of that is accomplished this year, along with many other things, OASC will be that much closer to the goals we hope to reach in the near future. Region Five rules!!!!! Respectfully submitted, Nick Caratelli, OASC State President |

West Virginia | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Warm summer greetings Region 5 from the hilly state of West Virginia! We've been keeping busy just as I am sure you have too! In March we conducted a leadership workshop in Washington, D.C. The students enjoyed their weekend touring many famous monuments and museums. It was a great experience. They also had a chance to see the city under preparations for the inaugural parade. In February we held our annual Legislature day. Our capital city of Charleston welcomed 425 WVASC students. We had a day of government speakers, tours of our capital, and an active debate on whether school should be held year-round in WV. We sent 3 student delegates and 3 adult delegates to Chicago for an amazing LEAD Conference hosted by our own Joshua Wilson. We also sent 54 students to the other LEAD Conference in Connecticut. After our busy winter and spring, we are now busy preparing for the 65th annual NASC conference. 19 students and advisors will be representing the great state of West Virginia. We hope to see you there representing the best region, 5!!! Repectfully Submitted, Gia Colanero, WVASC State President |

From Janet: I would like to say I have enjoyed this first year with all the activities that we have done so far. The LEAD conferences are really picking up and to be a part of them has been wonderful. I am looking forward to Charlotte and all the new things that Colby has in store for us. This opportunity has given me so much confidence in my own abilities to get in front of a group and express myself. This also helps me to encourage students to get involved and do more. Now I feel I am talking from experience now. |

From Josh: Well everyone, as the Region V'ers head home from North Carolina, this is the last tale I will tell. It has been my honor and a pleasure to serve as your Region V Student Representative for the past two years. These couple of years have been a blast, and I wouldn't have traded the time and memories for anything. Also, I must thank the six awesome Region V State Associations. Besides just being able to work with the highly experienced Executive Directors, Presidents, and State Boards, I have been welcome to each state's conferences. I was able to attend three Illinois State Conventions, three Indiana State Conventions, one Iowa State Convention, two Nebraska State Conventions, two Ohio State Conventions, and two West Virginia Fall Conventions. Thank you to the all the leaders and delegates who shared their state, hearts, and hospitality with me! In the future I will be attending DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and I will be majoring in Physics with Pre-Med preparation. Farewell! |
