Children With Diabetes is a web site dedicated to Kids wiht diabetes and what they and their parents can do about it.

Diabetic, you ask? Isn't that where you can't eat sugar? Or you have to take insulin?
What is Diabetes and how do you know you have it. Type 1 is the inability of the body to make insulin. Type 2 is not making enough insulin to keep your glucose or blood sugar levels normal. Most people have a vague notion about that aspect. Sadly people may find out they have diabetes after other damage appears. Like a theif in the night, you may not see it coming until you are robbed.
Diabetes causes the retina to detach from the eye. The excess sugar in the blood hardens the blood cells and damages the veins and arteries causing bruising and aiding cholestrol buildup of plaque leading to "hardening of the arteries." This increases your chance for heart problems. Also peripheral nuerapathy happens. Often in the feet but actually anywhere on your body. Some feel pain or just a tingle sensation or a charlie-horse feeling. Some muscle feel nothing at all. The heart is one of those muscles.
The worst effect is heart attacks. Why? Diabetics are 7 times more likely to have a heart attack. Often a heart attack goes without warning from the nuerapethy. I know many diabetics who felt slight indigetion and noticed that they were pale. Some go see the doctor and find out it is a heart attack. Often not the first heart attack. That is the silent thief. It sneaks in and you don't know your have it until something bad happens. This used to be quite common in older people, but the trend is moving downward in age.
Unfortunately many people are finding at younger ages that Diabetes Native American children have a higher risk of diabetes. Indication of excessive weight in Amercan increases the risk for diabetes. That an alarming trend that has been noted by the medical profession.
My mother is Diabetic type 2, and last year I too was diagnosed type 2. I was lucky and caught it early enough to control with my glucose levels with proper eating and losing weight. Tight control takes charge of the thief.
Whether you are Diabetic or not, this area will try to give you some resoruces to learn about it. Diabetics can lead normal lives with tight control. Cases in children of type 2 Diabetes are becoming more common especially amoung Native Americans. The high fat diets,with high carbs may be a source of this trend in America.
