A critical element in the design of a sand wedge is "bounce."
"Bounce" is defined as the angle between the leading edge
and the sole contact point along a level surface. The more
"bounce" you have the better the wedge plays in soft sand.
The less "bounce" you have the better the wedge plays in
firm sand or fairway conditions.
To effectively see "bounce" take a 7-iron and your sand wedge
and hold them up in the air. Look at the angle created from the
leading edge to the trailing edge of the club sole.

The first thing you must do for successful bunker play
is determine where your target is. Indicated by the green
line in the photo at left. Next, open your stance to the target
approximately 30 degrees indicated by the blue line.

Your weight should be equally distributed between both feet.
The ball should be positioned forward in your stance, between your
left heel and 2" from center. Indicated by the blue line.
The green line indicates the target line. The pink line reflects
my 30 degree open stance.

Be sure to dig your feet firmly into the sand. This helps
prevent sliding of your feet during the swing.
- Open the face of the club to maximize the "bounce" of your sand wedge
- swing the club back to shoulder high
- swing the club down entering the sand, approximately 2" behind the ball
as inidcated by the blue line
Finally, be sure to follow through. Leaving the club in the sand results
in the ball only traveling 6 - 10 feet.
