Programs at The Writers Center at Chautauqua
Carrie Myers, Center Director; Clara Silverstein, Proram Director
The Writers Center at Chautauqua offers weekly workshops dedicated to creative writing as a craft, a discipline, and an art. Aspiring writers of all levels of experience work with professional, published writers in a variety of literary genres.
In a workshop setting, our writers-in-residence take an in-depth look at each student's writing. Workshops, limited to 12 participants (ages 18 and above), meet at the CLSC Alumni Hall at 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for Poetry and 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. for Prose.
The fee for each one-week workshop is $90. Some leaders also offer private, half-hour conferences for workshop participants only and this option will be announced in class. A separate fee for this service is $20.
Submitting work is not a requirement for class admission, but is strongly encouraged. Leaders accept student work on Sundays following the 3:30 p.m. reading on CLSC Alumni Hall porch, or on the first day of class. Submissions are limited to 3-5 poems, or 10-12 pages of prose. Additional writing may be accepted during the week at the leader's discretion. Students are expected to BRING 14 copies of work they want to discuss in class.
We also offer several FREE presentations open to all: Sunday afternoon readings on the Alumni Hall porch at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday evening Chautauqua Women's Club lectures at 7:00 p.m., and Friday noon Brown Bag Lunch talks at the Alumni Hall Dining Room. Our program also includes a one-day workshop, Writers' Day (Sunday, July 14).
