A Custom Leg Armour based on a 15th Century Turkish Model
The Cuises are based on the Turkish Cuises with a Central hinge illustrated and discussed at the page on Leg Defenses.
The two front plates are attached to each other by hinges, the outside plates and knee coup are attached by maile in the fashion of Maile and Plates armour.
The major differences from the original are as follows:
1- On the original, the central plates are straight at the bottom -- here, they are rounded. This maximizes plate protection above the knee.
2- Similarly, the original plates are straight at the top -- here, they curve to conform to the needs of the upper thigh. Again, this allows for larger, more protective plates.
3- On the original, the outer plates are constructed of multiple, small plates connected by maile (in the manner of a Bakhteretz). Here, the outer plates are each a single plate. While providing less flexibility than the original, this design provides for a slightly stronger defense.
It was mostly done as construction time savings -- and hence a financial savings for the client.
This same leg harness is shown worn by the author in the photo of the Full Central Asian Armour.
