Loreena McKennitt
I was in a small esoteric bookstore in Albuquerque, New Mexico one autumn Saturday afternoon in 1995. While I was looking through the stacks for a book, the clerk and I were chatting. He was opening a CD and began telling me about the artist. He said she had the most wonderful voice and he wanted me to listen and tell him what I thought of her music. "Her name is Loreena McKennitt.", he said. "She's from Canada." The next sound I heard was the opening of "Mystic's Dream". That was all it took, just those first few strains of one song. I was hooked. For the next hour, I listened to "the mask and mirror" while browsing the entire contents of that bookstore. I bought the CD and took it home with me. Within a week, I had bought all her other CD's. I played them over and over and over. I still do.
I have never heard music like that before or since. Some of her songs take me back to what seems like a previous life from long ago. Never before have I listened to an artist and loved every single song on every single CD. I cannot pick a favorite, I absolutely love them all. I am anxiously awaiting the release of her next issue. According to the information on the Warner Brothers Loreena Page, that should be sometime in the autumn of 1997. *sigh* So I will have to wait with all the rest of her fans to hear what she's been writing since her last CD. It will be a long wait.
