WHO WE ARE

The Jackson County (WV) Commission on Aging is committed to serve the over 4500 senior citizens who call the county home. All people over 60 years old qualify for at least part of the programs we offer. We provide a clean, comfortable and friendly atmosphere that senior citizens always enjoy. We have found that as more seniors join the ranks, the more fun we all have.

Our centers in Sandyville, Ravenswood, and Ripley are easily accessible from all parts of the county. We are very proud of our newly constructed center in Ravenswood. Our theerapeutic exercise pool is the talk of the region. Plans have already been drawn for a new building in Sandyville. Noon meals are also being delivered to an experimental site, bi-monthly, at Kenna.

NUTRITION

Our cooks arrive at 5:30 a.m. to prepare an average of 200 hot lunches. Menus are formulated weeks in advance and approved by a registered dietitian.

There is no charge for a meal, but we do have a suggested donation schedule based on income.

Lunches are served at noon from all three of our centers in Ripley, Sandyville and Ravenswood. Guests are welcome, and birthday parties are common.

In the event a senior becomes home bound (even temporarily) arrangements can be made for a home delivery.

Please call our offices at 304-372-2406 to see if you qualify.

HEALTH CARE

While we do not provide skilled nursing, we do have two Registered Nurses that assist over 50 trained home care workers.

If you qualify, we can help provide personal hygiene assistance, light housekeeping, meal preparation, and essential transportation. Our staff can be an important link between the senior and other health care professionals. This is a limited but very useful program,

Our staff members are continually updating their skills with monthly training. Training encompasses from lifting techniques to working with visually impaired and more.

Our nurses are also on hand to monitor blood pressure and blood sugar levels on set dates at our three centers.

Any senior over 60 should call 304-372-2406 for details.

TRANSPORTION

We maintain a small fleet of specially equipped handicap vans.

Our routes do change during the week in an effort to provide access to some of the more rural parts of Jackson County.

Drivers make frequent stops at banking, grocery, medical and shopping areas for the convenience of seniors.

You will be picked up at your front door in the morning and be returned home by mid-afternoon.

Private transportation and assistance is also available through a separate program called L.I.F.E. with advanced arrangements, our drivers can transport seniors to regional medical appointments. These workers are also available for light housekeeping and shopping.
