Asatru (pron. AY-sah-true) means 'true to the Aesir'. The Aesir are a group of Norse Gods, which includes Odin (Woden, Wotan), Thor, Freya, Frigga and others. The Asatru religion was practiced by the ancient Germanic tribes, and later by the Vikings.

The Germanische Glaubens-Gemeinschaft (GGG) is an Asatru group which began in the year 1907, as a result of Ludwig Fahrenkrog's article 'The Germanic Temple' (see above). The GGG still exists today. Below are some sections from one of their publications. To contact the group, write to: Germanische Glaubens-Gemeinschaft, Danckelmannstr. 11, D-14059 Berlin, Germany.

There are about 5 major Asatru groups which sponsor Kindreds (a local Asatru 'church', they are also known as hearths, garths, steadings and hofs). There are also many Asatru believers who are not affiliated with any group. The popularity of the Norse mythology which is the basis for Asatru can be seen in the many novels which use Norse mythological themes, such as Diana Paxson's Woden's Children trilogy and Harry Harrison's Hammer and the Cross trilogy, as well as many other books by lesser known authors.

Symbol of Asatru --- The best known symbol of the Asatru religion is the hammer-token, which symbolizes the hammer used by the God Thor. A hammer-token necklace has been worn by Asatru believers since the Viking era.
