1998 population 247,469. Nineteen
percent of the population is below 150 percent of the
federal poverty level. The major city is Bradenton.
Health Care Access:
According to the Florida
Department of Business and Professional Regulation, in
1988, Manatee County had 419 medical doctors, 14
osteopathic physicians, 107 dentists, and 2,378
registered nurses actively licensed.
Status of
Volunteer Efforts:
Epilepsy Foundation of
Southwest Florida, Inc. is a private
not-for-profit social service agency. They provide
information and referral, in-service training, public
education, counseling, employment services, support
groups and sponsor a summer camp for young people with
epilepsy. Their Direct Client Services Program provides
neurological and case management services to low income
persons with epilepsy in Manatee County. For additional
