GLADES COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Both adults and teenagers volunteer at the health department, professional and non-professional. More are always needed.
Staff and clients of the Glades County Health Department appreciate the expansion of services that is possible with the assistance of their wonderful volunteers. One of these is a pediatric cardiologist, who donates two afternoons to the health department each month to meet the medical needs of the clients. Another lives in the community and regularly donates her time filing and assisting staff.
Many of the volunteers are teenagers. They are called "Healthkateens", and assist in the health department’s after school Teen Center, make presentations to other teenagers about delaying pregnancy, develop health message displays, etc.

Denisha Thompson (right) has volunteered in the teen center since its inception two years ago. She cheerfully works it into her busy schedule that also includes school, a part-time job, and an active social life. Consuelo Tarin (left), one of the staff members who work with the teenage volunteers, is very enthusiastic about the program. She notes that it gives the teens a chance to learn about health issues as they teach others.
